Jim,

That's why I said it may take me awhile to go through the book. You'd have to read what the car came with each year. Then it would probably say something like. "New for 19?? white wall tires were offered". That's probably the only way we'll find the right answer, if it even tells us that.

Of course they had the white metal trim rings in the late 30s and the 40s

to make it appear they had whitewalls.

Possibly the more expensive cars came out with whites, and the less

expensive Chevys, Fords, Plyms, etc did not.

There used to be a thing at the local tire store called "new car takeoffs"

when the buyer went pretty much directly from the dealership to the

tire shop and had whitewalls installed to replace the virtually new factory

blackwalls.

Or, the buyer upgraded - replacing the factory whitewalls with something

of better quality....like Goodyear Double Eagles.

I used to occasionally buy some of those takeoffs in the

early to mid 1960s....a nearly new tire for a reasonably cheap price.

Bob,

Back in the early 60's I needed a new set of tires for my 57 Ford. Went to the salvage yard where they only dealt in cars less than 5 years old. Pulled 5 brand new top of the line Firestone white wall tires (of the size I needed), that had never touched the ground out of the trunks of 5 different cars. At the time those tires were about $35 each at the tire dealer. Got the whole set of 5 for $25 and the yard even removed the tires from the rims for me.:) Oh for those good old days.

Pretty much my point. Where is the future POC president when he is needed?

Proudly riding in a 51 convert with whitewalls. From the factory there were no white walls but dealer options are allowed. And who's to say a top of the line convert wouldn't have gotten them at the dealer.

Tim;

I have a long set of legs. Is that what you have in mind:eek:

Speaking of hoarding old wide whitewalls......the folks I purchased my

Goodyear Double Eagles from back in the 1970s had a whole pile

of those tires warehoused since 1961 when they closed out their

service station. They were still wrapped in the brown paper when I

got them. Finally after several years, they began to get age cracks

even though they had very few miles on them. Finally replaced them with Firestones from Coker.

Never did see any long legged Russians........
