Normspeed Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Now that I'm on wireless for my PC, I'm preparing to close out my old ISP, Netzero. I tried to open a hotmail free account but got all tangled up with something called Windows Live Messenger, which wanted my Pop3 server and other stuff that doesn't ring a bell. Hotmail used to be such an easy thing to get, now it's like a cyber maze. Anyone have suggestions for a decent free email service that doesn't take a rocket scientist to set up? Quote
Young Ed Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Try google mail. I've never used it myself I use the email from my ISP but I've heard good things. Quote

teardrop puller Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 I have both Google and Yahoo, I like Google mail best. I can send you an invite if you PM me your e-mail address. It is the easiest way to get Google kai Quote
Dennis_MN Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Now, being on DSL I can apparently get an AOHELL free email, but that proved to complicated for me. Don't remember what the problem was, but it was more trouble than it was worth. I recommend Google gmail. I've used it for three or four years and find it to be terrific. I also have Yahoo but I use that only for commerical stuff, like when I register something and they ask for a E-mail account, I give out Yahoo. I like Gmail much better. Interesting side lite of google is the advertisements that tag along when you open your mail. they have a program which scans your e-mail then they attach ads which match your senders topic. Kinda.... I've gotten a lot of laughs over some of the ads that appear when my buddie send me stuff such as models on the beach etc. Some folks would be offended by such a program scanning your e-mail but I'm highly amused. greg g Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 been on yahoo for about 3 or 4 years. Their new version has a lot of bells and whistles. The only thing I don't care for is that it saves pictures and attachments whether you open them or not. Some of the attachments and pictures were unsolicited and unwanted, now I don't know how to delete them. They are on yahoo's server not on my puter but some I would not rather be associated are there none the less. My daughter has G mail throug google and says she like it. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 I use my website to run my email through. Also have an email address through my ISP. I never use that one though for anything other than email from the ISP. Don't get any junk on that one that way either. The way I look at it, the fewer addresses you have, the less time it takes to check it. I don't use any of those free email host due to the ads and them being able to track you for more ads to clutter things up. I will say this much though. No matter who you use, I'd stay away from AT&T wireless email. That seems to be a real mess. I don't have it, but my daughter switched to it sometime the beginning of this year. Ever since then when she sends email it takes a week for me to get it sometimes, if I get it. Then if I send her one, the same thing happens. I keep getting notices that the email can't be delivered, sometimes three or four days in a roll before those messages stop. If I were you I'd set up my email through my ISP. If you don't know what to put in the boxes when it ask for the POP number, call them on the phone and they will help you set it up properly. Quote
Englishbob Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 gmail email addresses are being banned from certain forums (i know of two custom car sites) because of the amount of spam they generate. Quote

Normspeed Posted October 20, 2008 Author Report Posted October 20, 2008 I went ahead and started up a Gmail account, thanks for the tips. So far it was real easy to register, has auto spam blockers, and seems less clunky than Netzero. As soon as I'm confident that it's going to work well for me, I'll be able to close out the Netzero account. My ISP now is Verizon Wireless, nice and fast. Quote

Microsoft is dropping the hotmail name...windows live is the same thing. If you used to have a hotmail acct, try to sign in again and it's likely still there. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 It's easy to get rid of Pop Ups. Just install the ABP (Add Block Program). Does not allow Pop Ups to Pop Up. Also blocks a lot of picture ads on sites. If it blocks something you think you want to see, just tell it to allow that picture or ad. Quote
Normspeed Posted October 22, 2008 Author Report Posted October 22, 2008 The gmail seems to be pretty user friendly. Took me a while to get used to the new screen layout but I think I'll keep it. Moving my contacts list from Netzero was a pain but only because netzero has some proprietary programming that does not allow direct exporting of your contacts. Interesting, I sent out an email (gmail) to the whole list, letting them know of the changeover. I got replies from a number of folks that I hadn't been in touch with lately, and got some nice replies and some sad news thrown in. An old friend passed away just last night. His wife responded to my email. He died quietly at home, pancreatic cancer. Grandadeo probably remembers him, it was Joe Ceci, aka General Joe of General Joe's Paintball in Rosemead. It being best to remember the best of times, I recall one time that Grandadeo and I returned from a road trip to the Nostalgia Drags at Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, to find that in my absence Joe had taken my little black dog and painted a white stripe down him from head to tail (non-toxic paint) so he looked like a skunk. I wish him happy landings! Quote
