Hi, I am new to the site. I have a 1950 plymouth suburban. I just came up on the site, looking for a overdrive tranny. I Am sending one to get it rebuilt.

Thanks to all of you that answers my basic questions. I won't ask any real hard ones. I have to know something to ask hard one . And I dont really know much. But willing to learn.

thanks again

jerry

I bought the suburban in calf. I brought it back to Greenville Texas. I was born and raised in louisville Kentucky. I have a twin brother we went to Fern Creek High school in the 60's.I have lived in the dallas area for 25 years. There is a great bunch of people here on the sight. I just got the suburban a week ago. She runs real nice But I need a overdrive.

If you are concerned about high engine revs at highway speeds you may want to consider swapping the rear end to one with a lower numeriv gear ratio. I believe for your car the rear end out of 70's "A" body cars from chrysler are a pretty easy swap and will give you a ratio of 3.23 or 3.55 to 1 wwhich will accomplish much the same thing as having the OD. OD's can be had from a very reliable source who is a friend of may on this site. He rebuilds them and supplies all the electrical stuff needed to install for about 1200 to 1500 bucks. It is a bolt in basically. The rear ends can be had for a lot less in bone yards, and are more difficult to install plus you need to have a new drive shaft made, but all in all might be more economical than the OD thing. Either option will give you a more relaxed engine at highway speed.

Jerry, I see that the plates are from California. Can I assume that you are from the Golden State too? If you are why not look into joining the Golden State Region of the Plymouth Owners Club? You and your car would be a perfect fit. And... think of all the fun you will have going on tours with the club... We'd love having you aboard.

most 'a' bodys from the '70's had 2.76 to 1; my '73 scamp had 2.49 to 1

earlier 'a' bodies had 3.23, but it's REALLY hard to find a 7 1/4 with 3.55's

if you get REALLY lucky and find an 'a' body 8 3/4, you might find 3.55's or 3.23's plus, 8 3/4's are damn near indestructable
