Willis Pingel Posted September 25, 2008 Report Posted September 25, 2008 Hello everyone, I need help, lots of help. I'm working on my 48 b1b and trying to start the engine, I bought it last fall and the truck was strip clean, frame and cab sand blasted and then it was stored many years, so I got it in a bushel basket. I need pictures of where the battiery goes, how the wire harnies goes thought the fire wall, how the linkage hooks up to the tranny [ it's a 3 speed on the column] Anyway getting back to weak spark, I changed plug wires, plugs, and condensor[points look good] and I'm getting a weak spark. Any help would be great. Bill Quote
Fernando Mendes Posted September 25, 2008 Report Posted September 25, 2008 In this pic you can see the place of battery. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted September 25, 2008 Report Posted September 25, 2008 Hey! that guy looks familure. Here's a closer shot of the battery area. The Neg. cable runs along the frame to the starter. The Pos. cable goes to one of the cover bolts on the trans. And just to clarify, those were the cables that came with my truck. They are the original Neg. cable and an aftermarket light 12V Pos. cable. I since replaced both with heavy 00 gauge cables. And here's a shot of my parts truck, showing where the harness comes through the firewall. If I can be of any other help, Bill, let me know. Maybe I need to schedule another road trip with my truck so you can see a finished product (well, almost finished). Merle Quote
brian hood Posted September 25, 2008 Report Posted September 25, 2008 Go to Amazon.com and order you one of Don Bunn books (Dodge Truck History). It has a wealth of photo's and information. Additionally, do your self a favor and get a shop manual. Brian Quote

1949P17BC Posted October 1, 2008 Report Posted October 1, 2008 try a new coil, make sure the plug wires have a clean, solid connection Quote
greg g Posted October 1, 2008 Report Posted October 1, 2008 Couple things. Make sure the point gap (.020) is properly set. This is best done with the dizzy out and on the bench. While checking in the dizzy assure the wire that runs internally from the terminal on the body to the points is in good shape and not rubbing against the diz. If its frayed, it may be inadvertantly grounding on the diz body. Return the distributor to its place and assure the wire that feeds the points terminal is conected to the (+) coil terminal, and the (-) is connected to the ign. crcuit. Then assure the coil wire is firmly seated in the distributor cap. Second culprit is primary cables that are too small. The 6V system depends on current flow and if the cable are skinny 12V ones the starter will draw most of the flow leaving little for the ign circuit. The cables should be 1 gauge or 0 gauge. Nice thick ad beefy. Also since you mentioned that your frame is freshly painted. Make sure the ground cable completes a nice clean ground to metal not paint or chassis coating. If you're cocerned about appearence, paint it after tightening it down. Also when you get your cab mounted run a cable from the cab to the frame, this will assure all your stuff in the cab works well. So for 6V beefy wire, and good clean grounds for everything is the rule. OH yea!!! Welcome aboard. Quote
Willis Pingel Posted October 1, 2008 Author Report Posted October 1, 2008 try a new coil, make sure the plug wires have a clean, solid connection Well I started over and went through all the steps again, checking connections, and setting and found the points gap were to wide, corrected them and it took off and scarded the crap out of me. Was'nt expecting it I guess. But it's running good now. Thanks for all the help Guys I need a few parts like a head light bucket for the drivers side, The two chrome pieces that go over the wiper transmisions and what ever goes over the defrost vent inside. I got no idea what they even look like, can't find nothing in the bushel basket cause I don't know what I'm looking for. I'm going to try to send same pictures so you guys know what I'm talking about Bill Quote
Willis Pingel Posted October 1, 2008 Author Report Posted October 1, 2008 I guess I don't know how to post a picture. Help!!! Bill Quote
Merle Coggins Posted October 1, 2008 Report Posted October 1, 2008 I might have a headlight bucket that'll work for you. Which type of wipers do you have? The vaccume wiper system uses a bezel and a large nut that held everything together. The electric wipers use 2 screws to attach the bezel to the pivot linkage. Here's the vaccume wiper arm, bezel, and nut. (the pivot on the right is an electric type) And here's the bezels for the electric wipers. These had been painted so I had to clean them up before using them. You can also see in the first picture that the wiper arms attach differently too. For the interior defrost vent covers... what you are actually looking for is the full inside windshield trim. There will be 2 "C" shaped pieces that go around the inside of the window rubber, and are attached with screws into the windshield frame. Here's a pic of one. And if you'll email me your pics, I'll get them posted here for you. Merle luv2wingit@sbcglobal.net Quote
