randroid Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 Gents, I've been hearing the praise given to Firefox (vs. IE) from lots of you so a few weeks ago I downloaded it and began checking it out. So far it's been a nuisance at best and slower than the second coming of Jerusalem. I'm sure there's a lot of tweaking I can do to it to bring it up to speed, meaning make it as fast as IE, but I can't really see any point to that. Simply stated, what's the great advantage it offers that seems to be eluding me? -Randy Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 none if you are not happy..dump it and go back to your original..millions of users cannot all be considered wrong...main part is what you cut your teeth on...always will seem easier.. Quote
dezeldoc Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 The main thing about Firefox over IE is the security issues. IE is the most vulnerable to hackers over Fierfox, Opera or the others. Where are you seeing the slowness? My Opera and Firefox are faster than IE, Do you have the latest version? Do an update on it and check to make sure. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 I personally don't care for IE. I'm on dialup and Firefox seems to work faster than IE does on my machine. I haven't had any issues with Firefox since I started using it sometime last winter or fall. Also, I believe Firefox provides more privacy than IE does. I also like using Thunderbird with Firefox as my email program. Takes care of the junk a lot easier than IE does. At any rate, it comes down to one thing. The best browser to use is the one you yourself likes best, not what everyone else likes. Quote
Young Ed Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 I do not believe Firefox is less vulnerable. IE gets hit more because it has the most users so thats what they attack. I bet if everyone switched to firefox it would get hacked to bits too. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 Ed, in reality they are less vulnerable..reason is as you said yourself, they do not have the users that IE has and thus it is not cost effective for hackers to mess with...guess if one gets bored to tears they could...it would be like sneaking into a third world country...its possible but why? Bodacious Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 I switched to Firefox a couple of years ago at my son's urging. I would never go back. The coolest thing about it is all of the add-ons for personalizing it. I've never noticed any speed issues with it as long as my maintenance is up to date. No different than anything else in that respect. Quote
dezeldoc Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 Has anyone tried Opera? It works really good and has lots of bells and whistles that you can make it do, or make as simple as you want. http://www.opera.com Quote
randroid Posted August 20, 2008 Author Report Posted August 20, 2008 Gents, I've been on Firefox since I wrote the original thread and now it's starting to cook, and here's why: I'm on dialup and it needs to get a lot of information from my ISP (Earthlink) before it can start working properly, and I haven't been giving it enough time. Seems to be a one-time thing for it because I've been in-and-out of it and it hasn't tried to reload the same info. As an example of the difference in speed, I use Excite.com for my TV listings because Earthlink thinks my zip code (and the entire Denver area, evidently) are located on the East Coast. If I click on a program to view its contents, when I try to return to the program grid it can take up to about fifteen seconds to get there. With Firefox it takes less than two seconds. Not the most scientific sort of test, I agree, but the best example I've run across yet. I'm sure there will be more. Thanks for all your input; I think I'll keep Firefox around for further evaluation. -Randy Quote
