Norm's Coupe Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 If anyone ever wondered how it really looks inside that original 50 or 60 year old gas tank, here's what you'll see. More pictures to follow in next post. "What's in your tank?" Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 that is excellent compared to my suburban's tank...if there is enough left to call a tank that is...now much to my suprise, the 41 Town Sedan original tank is spotless inside...like new metal...totally amazed me... Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted August 19, 2008 Author Report Posted August 19, 2008 More pictures, and "That's all folks". Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted August 19, 2008 Author Report Posted August 19, 2008 Tim, This one had a lot more in there before the vibration of the nibbler knocked some of the loose stuff off. Had a big pile of rust next to the tank when I was finished. Guess I should have taken a picture of that too before tossing it. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 I noticed you had used a nibbler...them things co a good job when you want to keep sparks down and not distort the edges..I have a lot of mods to do with the tank Ijust picked up inorder to use if for my wagon..lots of cutting and welding.. Nibblers are nice that way. Only problem is the little half moon shavings you get on the floor while cutting. Then they get stuck in the bottom of your shoes. Have to use a pair of needle nose pliers to pull the shavings out of my shoes after using it. Will also sound like you are beating a drum when cutting a tank like that. I wasn't trying to be neat to save the tank. Tried to dump it at the city dump and they wouldn't take it. Said it had to have big holes in it before I could dump it. So...........I brought it back home, cut it up like that and tossed it in the garbage can instead of making another trip to the dump. There were no fumes to worry about. It had sat outside behind the garage for about a year before I cut it up. Quote
brian hood Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 Is there a place to send a tank UPS for repair in the South East? Brian Quote
Tom Skinner Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 Norm, Nice pictures, Thanks for sharing. So you got the old one off, where did you find a replacement? Tom Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted August 20, 2008 Author Report Posted August 20, 2008 There are all kinds of places around just about any major city that will do it for you. Just check the phone books and make a few calls. However, you can usually buy a reproduction steel or poly tank for about the same price it will cost to have an old one fixed. So.......why not buy new. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted August 20, 2008 Author Report Posted August 20, 2008 Norm,Nice pictures, Thanks for sharing. So you got the old one off, where did you find a replacement? Tom I bought a poly tank from PlyDo. Of course PlyDo seems to be a little up in the air right now. However, you can buy a reproduction steel tank from Tanks Inc. They have a website but don't know the address. Cost is about $250 or so for either one. I would have gone to Tanks Inc for a steel one but didn't know about them at the time. Also Rock Automotive, Rockford, IL will sell you a stainless reproduction for around $600. Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 I just looked at the site for Tanks Inc and the 41-48 dodge & plymouth alloy steel tanks are only $215 . That sure beats cleaning out an old one . Quote
55 Fargo Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 I just looked at the site for Tanks Inc and the 41-48 dodge & plymouth alloy steel tanks are only $215 . That sure beats cleaning out an old one . Jerry here is a pic of the $215.00 tank in my 47 Chrysler Coupe, it is the Tanks.inc, 1941 to 1948 Mopar Gas Tank. You have to mod the mounting straps a bit, the filler neck hooks up very well to the stock filler neck extension that comes up to the gas cap. If you are running a 12 v system no issue with a 1 wire fuel sender unit, if you are running a 2 wire 6 volt snder, you need to shorten the float arm and place ii in a slight different direction, quite simple actually.........Fred ps so far very happy with this tank, should have bought there stainless version for $325.00 though Quote
Tom Skinner Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 Thanks for the information about Tanks Inc. I will definetely go with a new one if needed. I will drop my old one and have a peek inside first. Maybe a litle cleaning is all thats needed. If not replacing it sure beats re-conditioning it. Tom Quote
Allan Faust Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 Note to self: time to schedule next colonoscopy:) Just remind me to not have a gastroscopy after your colonoscopy.... last time I had one I was wondering if they used the same camera!!! Allan Quote
Normspeed Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 Allan, they do, but when you've been Demerol'ed, who cares:D Quote
Don Jordan Posted August 24, 2008 Report Posted August 24, 2008 I took my tank to a radiator shop - they boiled it out and coated it. I don't remember with what but it is white. I don't remember what I paid it was many years ago. But I feel confident all the rust was boiled out. Quote
