Glass bowl filters

Just kind of wondering how many folks have there original glass bowl filters in place? I have never had any problems with this filter and kind of wonder why any one would want to replace it. It looks interesting and it is stock. Jon:D

I have had more than a few of those leak on me so I quit using them, went back to the metal ones. I wished I could find a kit for the glass bowl pumps they work great.

Are you talking about the glass bowl filter on the fuel pump? Or a glass bowl filter before the carburetor? Fuel pump glass bowl may be original. Glass bowl filter prior to the carburetor is most likely an add on.

However both are cleanable and rarely rupture and fail.

I guess it might be an add on glass bowl befor the carberator. I thought they came stock with that filter but maybe they didn't? Some reseach is in order to figure this one out.

The truck engines came with both a sediment bowl on the fuel pump and a glass bowl filter at the carb. Like Jon I thought the cars did too. I like the look of the old glass filters too and have one on some of my clunkers.

my 51 just has the glass sediment bowl at the fuel pump, and no filter on the way to the carb. I've always found the glass bowl filters at the pump actually work very well, as long as they are emptied and cleaned regularly.

The little clamp on the bottom does tend to loosen up and leak every now and then, so I always check it. My 59 Fairlane was notorious for leaking where the bowl met the pump!

If you guys run a google search on "Glass Fuel Filters", you come up with a lot of people complaining on various forums about leaking and glass breakage. Also about having trouble replacing the older type bowls when they do break.

I guess I just like to have my old car as original as possible even with a glass fuel filter. I may be a little crazy but these things worked for quit a while and I have never had any problem with mine. All thought I did have a problem finding a gasket to seal the glass to the filter body but I found a filter and it had a gasket with it. Jon:D

The 2 types I have for my car and truck have modern paper filters available at napa and come with new gaskets for between the bowl and housing. That being said I haven't gotten around to installing one on either car or truck

Here is another style. This fits the aftermarket AC ones. I have a third filter element that is similar to the ones pictured but it doesn't fit either of the filters I have. So if these dont maybe that one will.
