manifold heat riser flap

Almost rdy to fire up my new engine..hopefully this weekend but I have one concern..and couldnt find much info in the archives..so I thought I'd ask..

when i was cleaning up my manifold..i saw that the heat riser thing on the side was froze up..the flap didnt move..i tried to free it..for hours..but finally gave up as I figured I'd break it if i continued..

Here is the question...the flap was not closed (stuck in halfway position) so I figured it would be ok..

Now as I'm getting rdy for initial start up, I'm concerned. Can I repair it and if so where do i get parts?

Any advice would be much appreciated..and I'm going to hold off on start up till i clear this up.. I really wish I had a good manifold to use..but haven't been able to locate one..

I'd really like the dual carb set up with the split headers ..but have no idea where to get them or install them..

In Sothern Cali it shouldn't be an issue. You could just cut the flap off or bend it so it partially seals off the intake chamber. I removed mine. then welded the shaft hole closed. I put a piece of sheet metal over the gasket and bolted it down with some counter sunk bolts.

There is also a supplier of heat riser repair kits and a how to do it.

I rebuilt my B3B heat riser, spring and flap, last year for my frame-off project. It's a very simple job, maybe a couple of hours. The original rebuild-set came from Bernbaum. I just ordered another Heat Riser set from Clester's (to make up a full order) for my B3B driver manifold. The Heat Riser function is probably not as effective for engines in temperant climates, but Dallas does have hot/cold extremes so I elected to keep the heat riser functioning for those cold-start days. The kits cost under $50.

Mine was stuck in the open position when I got my truck. The manifolds were also off of the engine when I got my truck. I soaked it for a couple of months with different penetrating oils but it wouldn't fee up. So I applied heat to the manifold just above the pin on each side and it popped loose. I then had to replace the broken spring and it's fine now.

With the manifold on the engine my technique wouldn't work, but maybe it'll give you an idea.
