  1. I'd save the tranny oil to mix with acetone (50/50) to battle stubborn rusted things...use the SAE 30 for the oil bath. Just my opinion
  2. Walmart is also counting on you buying more than just the oil when you're in there, thus making up for the lower price by other sales.
  3. I've been meaning to post this for a while so here it is. This is my first oil painting on canvas since I was a senior in high school 30 years ago. It helped to watch a few Bob Ross videos on YouTube beforehand. A Pilothouse Dodge is nestled in an old shed while being looked upon by the winter moon. My angles are off a bit on the shed and the truck for that matter, but I'm still happy with the painting overall. Hope you guys enjoy looking at it. My thoughts are that the truck is in good running order, its just that the owner hasn't gotten up to the shed yet after the recent snow.
  4. Packed up the family and drove into town for the weekly concert in the park. A 5 piece brass band played a wide variety of music including pieces from the 1600s and TV show themes from the 50s and 60s. The dogs enjoyed the show, too. The kids' school principal inquired about my car when I went back to it to grab my wife's vest and caught him looking it over. He found my stories very interesting and commented on how shiny the car looked. Its a good 20 footer in the right light LOL. In the wrong light you can see all the streaks left in the finish from the brush strokes.
  5. Final shot after we returned home. No change in the Penetrol finish. After having the Rotella 15w-40 in the car for a bit now, I'm not happy to report that the engine is still using oil, maybe even more than when I had the Castrol 10w-30 running in it. I'll just keep going and see what happens....
  6. Tonight (Aug. 22) wifey, the dogs and I took a cruise over to Spring Grove and back, about a 35 mile round trip. So this would be the first real trip out and about after applying the Penetrol, which is really dry and seems to be pretty solid. I don't think it got put to the test tonight though, as there was no rain or wind, and the sun was going down. I suppose it will take a few weeks to see just how well it will hold up.
  7. Last night we had planned on taking the Meadowbrook for a cruise, but it rained so we wimped out. Instead we got this glorious rainbow that touched the ground on both ends in the field across the road from us. I couldn't capture the entire thing with my phone. The second pic is looking down the road past our little granary at the beautiful sky.
  8. Interesting what you had to say about the keys. So far (before your statements) I was unsure if keys like that were actually distributed by dealers or if they were an aftermarket thing only. I guess they were both. In the case of my keys, I think the original owner (Ray Sebo) bought them (or earned them ha ha) from the Chrysler Seifert Baldwin Dealer (Winona, MN) as his name is STAMPED on the back of the medallion. His address was scribed on back of one key with a precision engraver, which he certainly did himself at home because it wasn't very precise. Thanks for posting this as it is very interesting, and its now something I can refer back to. Kinda makes my set of key more than a novelty; I wonder if the original owner had bought other cars from that particular dealer before, or what the story was behind it. I guess I could call his daughter again, but I'm guessing she wouldn't know as she was pretty young when he bought the car new. Her stories came about more from the late 1950s. Here's a couple pics in case anyone missed these in earlier posts:
  9. Drove into town to buy stamps at the P.O. This was after the eclipse peaked, but the sky was still dim. Got quite a few looks from eclipse onlookers outside of the bar. Hope they didn't go blind from staring at my shiny paint!
  10. A blanket or pad to lay on when you're underneath the car for maintenance. Extra hose clamps.
  11. After my son and I finished the car, we got out the John Deere so we could haul away brush while the car dried. We have an enormous wall of bushes between our house/yard and the highway, and they needed trimming. My son drives the loader (even though he's only 7) and does very well. Of course I'm sitting right there so I can brake, steer, or shift to any gear if need be. He can operate the bucket, too. Its awesome to watch him operate it; he has to sit on the edge of the seat to reach the pedals LOL.
  12. Here's another before and after so you can compare a little better.
  13. All done.... I guess the next step is to get it out on the road and see how it holds up to the weather. I'll keep you guys posted. If applied just right it really makes a nice shine, almost like a clear coat. Certainly not as durable, but easy to apply and doesn't cost much. I think I used a 1/3 of a quart. I think I paid $18 for the quart.
  14. All done....
  15. Roof half done.
  16. Looks decent enough from behind. I did remove the license plate so I could get behind it.
  17. Half the hood done here.
  18. Aug. 20 Day 2 of the Penetrol application. With the help of my son we finished up the rest of the car. It turned out pretty nice, better than I expected. The stuff looks wet even when its totally dry. Within about 4 or 5 hours its finally not tacky anymore. I'm going to leave it overnight just to make sure. Of course a ton of bugs in my garage got caught in the stuff while it was still wet. No biggie I guess. Here's what I've found out about applying the product: -I would say use a foam brush and not a regular paint brush. Seems to go on smoothly if you go the right speed and apply the right pressure. -It sets fairly quickly, so if you run the brush over what you just applied, it will make little bubbles and also what looks like brush strokes. -I've found that you need a generous amount on the brush for each stroke because its best to try and make it the length of whatever panel you're applying it to, i.e. run the length of the hood instead of stopping in the middle. If you stop, you can see marks where you start again. But you can't put too much on otherwise it will run and make bubbles. Trial and error to get the right amount on the brush. -Can't apply it too fast. Nice even medium speed strokes with moderate pressure works well. Here's a shot of the rear fender done, but not the trunk yet.
  19. That is awesome, thanks for posting! A Gyro-Matic...interesting. I have yet to drive a car with that setup. Where is this car?
  20. I'd like to report this morning that the Penetrol is completely dry, but it looks like I just applied it. Has a nice wet sheen.
  21. I'm usually up 'til 2 or 3, what's your excuse? No good reason I guess. I get my "me" time this late only....
  22. Very, very interesting. I like to see things like this. Please post details when you get to that point!
  23. Driver's side front wheel, before and after.
  24. Under a harsh light in the garage; fender, door and wheel.
  25. Front fender and driver's door again. Not the best lighting but you can see what I'm getting at.
