Does anyone know how the repaired wheel feels? Mine seems to be made from a solid colored rubber. Does painting it give it a different feel? Is it prone to cracking in the sun? Mines in pretty good shape, I always try to cover it if parked in the sun for an extended period of time. Is there a moisturizing anti-aging cream offered by Mary Kay or Avon to prevent our wheels from showing stress cracks? As for the $250, sounds about what the refurbished wheels go for on ebay. I figure spending $250 on something you see isn't that big of a deal, considering how much we spend on things you don't ever see!

Does that radio say "Motorola?" So weird to see early products from companies that have been around for awhile!

I don't remember what the mats look like, but I was at home depot last week and they sell rubber flooring/mats off of a roll that look similar to the original '49 rubber flooring (at least to my memory). Perhaps it could be cut to look like your mats? Good luck on the hunt!

Oh my Norm! Well at least you can tell your wife she had "buns of steel!" So did you fix the car up? Merle, as for the lap belts, I would guess hide 'em is the best bet. Otherwise if the cop is conversationalist when he pulls you over, just say the car is exempt because of age and the after market belts are to give the Mrs. some piece of mind and in fact and accident would cause the floor boards to rip up and your guts to spill out... Wow...after writing that it sounds rather gruesome! On second thought, if you see a cop's lights, floor it and make sharp turns until you find a deserted warehouse to hide out in! Bob, when I was little my mom and I were in like a 15 car bumper to bumper accident. She was the brake in the line, as she left enough space as to not hit car in front of us. Unfortunately, the car behind us didn't leave space. Ever since then, I always try to keep an eye on the distance of the cars behind me...Man, if I ever saw a truck barreling 70 mph at me..phew, i would probably need a new pair of shorts!

On a sorta related note, your northern neighbors (WI) gave police new authority to pull over vehicles and cite tickets on the sole reason that seat belts are not buckled. Started today. Seems like they never run out of reasons to pull me over though, so just another one to the list! Not sure if it only applies to the driver, but my memory is telling me unbuckled passengers count as well for justification. Save a life, save a buck, wear your seat belt! --Or just drive an exempt vehicle and hope those old vehicle crash pics look worse than they feel!

Hey Randy, I live in good 'ol Wisconsin. Drive a '49 Chrysler Windsor (2nd series) convertible. Used to own a '49 Plymouth (2nd series) 4-door Deluxe. Finding the right car for me was like figuring out who to ask to a Homecoming dance. Knew I never had a chance with the most popular gal, so I figured out who I liked and and had somewhat of a chance with! So I flipped though a huge coffee table book with all the cars made up to the present. I'd look at car, read about it, and then (most importantly) look at the price to own. As soon as I saw a pic it was love at first site with the '49 Mopar models. Plenty of head room, 1st redesign since WWII, reliable, and to top it off, I could afford it! Few years later plunked down my classic car savings and found my "keeper.":D

Thanks Norm! Really nice guy on the phone. They gave the range of 300-400. Might go with them rather than me doing it myself. I wouldn't have time to tackle it until next week, and don't really have the time to dedicate more than one day to work on the car (and can't leave the convertible out really, as I only have a one space garage!). I'll keep ya' posted...By any chance does mentioning your name get a 30% discount? If I do go there I'll be sure to mention that you sent me, maybe at least they'll be super nice the next time you pull in!

I have a set of the ones from ebay.Came with the car, so I don't know the seller, but I've seen 'em on there too. Its pretty much paperboard. If your handy cutting a straight line with an excacto knife it you'd be saving yourself a few extra bucks, plus a Hobby Lobby, Ben Franklin's, or Michael's may have more color choices that would be closer to your car. I have maroon ones, and my interior is blue. Haven't installed them yet, as I probably will need to cut out speaker holes and cover with cloth. I think you might get away with spray painting your old ones though. Lotsa spray paint colors, and a few coats would eliminate most blochy spots.

Hey gang, Got a 97 Ford Taurus that was making a loud sound (the faster the car the louder the sound, regardless if foot is on the accelerator). Took it to a shop, for $75 they determined it is the Hub bearings (passenger side is worse than driver's). They charge $90 per hour. So their estimate is 121.06 per bearing so if did both sides it would cost 242.12 for parts and the said labor would be 225.00 for both. the total cost to replace both of the bearings would be 493.28. Now I've had the fronts off my 49 Chrysler too many times to count, and those bearings seem pretty darn easy to get too. Would working on a 97 Ford Taurus be about the same as the Chrysler, minus removing disc brakes rather than drum brakes? I'm thinking I could do it, what other factors should I consider by having a shop do it versus me? Thanks!~Adam p.s. Anyone around these here parts know of a trustworthy and reasonably priced shop?

The one from Bernbaum's has the right outline in the gasket material, but I do not know of a current kit that makes a second plunger kit. At home I have the number of the company that rebuilt mine before I bought it in 2003. They may sell the gasket kit with the second plunger. (I don't recommend their work though, four years after the rebuild the darn thing was leaking!) Post if you do find the end of the rainbow!

Yeah, sorry we missed you Merle! I was thinking of everyone there on Thursday night. I got stranded at the hospital while visiting my dad. My car doesn't have top, so got to hang out in ICU all night. Boy, I don't know how patients get any sleep. I'm healthy and I couldn't get a wink with all the lights, beeps, and nurses coming in at 4 am to do xrays! Just glad it didn't hail at all! Was everyone busy washing their cars on Saturday morning before the judging started?

I'm not that much of a photo junkie, but here's two ideas for you. The first is getting a Flickr account. Its an online photo sharing site run by Yahoo! Their free account allows 100mb of photos to be uploaded per month. You can choose to have those photos to be seen by anyone and their grandma, or you can set it to private, where you select what individuals are granted access to certain photos. If you feel that is not enough, there is a "pro" account that costs 24 bucks for the whole year which allows an unlimited number of photos to be uploaded. That may be cheaper than making and mailing cds for everyone you want to send them to. The one thing nice about online hosting like Flickr is you can always go back and send links or files of old photos. Say you had a photo of you and Meg Ryan riding in a 1958 Porsche from a few years back, and Meg was curious if she could see a copy of it, in a matter of a few seconds she could find the photo. Flickr also lets you browse photos, search photos, make photo "sets" (similar to folders or albums), and you can view as a slide show. No one needs any software on their computer to see the photos, only internet access. As for the photo cd, if you were accurate in stating the folder size was indeed 60 mb, then that should fit on a cd without a problem. I would just copy the pictures or the folder directly to the cd. Most computers (post 1997 --which was 12 years ago) have built in photo viewing software, so they would just open the cd folder, and their photo viewing program would allow them to look at the photos individually or as a slide show. Wow! What a find! I'm really surprised at the price. Maybe its because I'm used to seeing woody convertibles listed to near 6 digit prices. I've always had an inkling for a woody wagon, but the extra maintenance on the panels scares me off. Just outta curiosity, do those 50's wagons get hotter than 4 door sedans in summer? I remember we went to Yellowstone two summers ago and got caught in midday construction on our way into the park. I remember thinking, "Oh man, imagine if we were in the Plymouth!" I do believe if I ever got an older wagon that would be the one modification I would add...air conditioning!

Howdy, I don't know this first hand, but according to a few other posts I have read on aaca.org, the Bleachy White is like cocaine, turns your white walls yellowish after awhile and the only thing that removes the yellow stain is more Bleachy White. I don't want to to stoke any unconfirmed rumors, as that may not be the case, but just thought you should know those statements have been made! As for me, I've scuffed up my whitewalls several times and I used a plastic bristled brush with Coral Blue car wash water. Has worked rather well well for me.

"the museum as $37,000 in the car. " Is that s'posed to say the have 37k into the car, or that's what they think its worth, or that's the reserve. Not that I can afford the car, just curious when comparing the final sale price? BTW, I think in grade school and high school they should show teenagers what kinda car they can afford to drive depending what career they take...might find students stay in school and try a bit harder then...

Swung by the hotel parking lot last night. Wow! They had some beauties! Probably about 20 cars there yesterday evening. Nothing from the second series 1949...Hopefully some of those show up (they're my favorite model year). We've decided the 36 models are officially on the keep-dreaming-Christmas-wish-list.
