340 is more on the oldskooool hype side nowadays. Overpriced because of it's legendary reputation, but there's actually plenty of more reasonable builds awailable if you are not restoring a numbers matching multidollar 340 e-body.
I would definately go the 408cid stroker route despite the need, street or strip, if SBM is the baseplant. Give it a thought, the whole kit with NEW crank, NEW rods, NEW pistons, NEW bearings, balanced etc. runs less than $1500,- for example in Ohio Cranks or dozen other places. DIY or ready to run you name it, hard to beat hp and tq combined into proven reliability.
Add another $1500,- in form of Edelbrock RPM alu heads on top of that shortblock and that truck will fly the streets with all NEW motor and less investment, than an tired 340 which is great engine, but not worth those bucks anymore.
Damn did I sound like I sell these... well I don't. I just have built several FAST mopar SB's, both 340 and 360, up to +600hp so they kind of grow on me;)
