  1. Nice looking car! Maybe you can post more pics when you get it home.
  2. I second that. I have been meaning to rewire my taillights and hookup my turn signals for two years and haven't gotten around to it. I love the paint job.
  3. That is great news. Hope you find another car you can love as much as you have that Plymouth over the years. Your advise has been invaluable to so many of us here.
  4. I had a 53 Powermaster for 4 years. It had the 251ci flathead and no power equipment. It had poor acceleration but was a nice riding car. I am sure your car with hemi and power accessories will be a great cruising car once you have addressed the safety issues with tires, brakes etc.
  5. After reading all the posts I bought one of these for my 1950 Wayfarer. It was not exactly a fit. I had to modify the steel panel in front of the radiator and drill new bottom holes in the radiator - the predrilled holes were about an inch and one half off. With those alterations it works well and looks nice too..
  6. On my 50 Dodge I went with the longer belts in front and shorter ones in back. I love the dash on those 49-52 Chryslers!
  7. I agree. I wish I had 1/10 the ambition you do. I can't get motivated to fix even simple things like the turn signals on my 50 Wayfarer.
  8. I would LOVE to have one just like it! What a nice cruiser.
  9. The big thing about the straight 8 with fluid drive is it was (and is) extremely thirsty. My Dad had a 49 New Yorker and he claimed the range of gas mileage was 8-9 city to 12-13 highway. Of course gas was 23 cents a gallon then. My Mother complained about how hard the car was to steer while parking or at low speeds. Considering how much weight was on the front axle with that heavy engine block it is no surprise. But I still wish I had one like it.
  10. My Wayfarer with a rebuilt 230 and a 3.9 rear end will probably cruise all day at 70 but with the old suspension and drum brakes I don't cruise over 65 and off the interstate stick to about 60.
  11. We went on a tour of this fantastic museum in Pensacola, FL last week and came across this old Plymouth. My guess is it is a 1941 can someone enlighten me? Needless to say it would look good in my garage - I'd love to have one just like it!
  12. Interesting - I had the same experience with a "trusted vendor". The replacement spring was too short so I put the old one back in. I will check your suggested supplier.
  13. Thanks guys it is in off-site storage until April 1 but I will refer to your responses and put the suggestions to work when I pick it up.
  14. I am putting my car to bed later today for the winter but do have a question about the vacuum wipers. My Wayfarer has a rebuilt dual action fuel pump. When I turn ON the wipers they move across the windshield to the up position and stop. If I turn them OFF then they go back to the down position. I don't generally drive in the rain but I had occasion to last week. I can get somewhat normal (but slow) operation by switching the wipers repeatedly on and off. Just wondering if anybody has a similar experience. I suppose I could get the wiper motor rebuilt but for the rare times I drive in any rain it hardly seems worth the expense. It's going to be a long cold 5 months without my car.
  15. If it was my call (it is not) we would spend 5 months in Florida or Arizona and seven here in Minnesota and I could drive the Dodge year round. But my wife probably has it right - five months away from my grandkids would be tough even for me. I took my last drive through Washington County over the weekend we had a great year for fall color! The car is going down for the winter November 4th.
  16. You sure have done a lot in one year. I like the radio FM conversion idea. I had mine rebuilt as standard AM and there is little besides talk radio here on AM now, certainly no good music stations within range of my house. In Minnesota in 1950 all the auto license plates were all numbers and the Minnesota DMV will not let me use an original plate without a letter.
  17. That car would look great with any tires but especially sharp with those wide whites!
  18. Yes I am old enough to remember "porta-walls. You let the air out of the blackwall and put these on in the front of the tire. My brother had them on his 38 Chev but if you scraped the curb they shredded!
  19. The "nice" thing about the Twin Cities is we can get 40 inches one winter and 90 the next - you just never know...
  20. It is ironic that you probably couldn't even order whitewalls on a Wayfarer in 1950 but I think on a stock 40's or 50's car they do look good.
  21. Well I got the new Diamondback wide whites installed today. It was a 16 mile drive home from the shop and so far so good. I like the looks and the way they ride. You can see we have nice fall color - unfortunately it means close to time to put the car to bed for the winter.

    Diamond Back?

To me in the end it came down to two things the radial construction and the way the wide white sidewalls are bonded and hold up. There is no perfect decision although my installer has had better results with Diamond Back's.

    Diamond Back?

When I called Diamond Back without me even asking they said they had some discontinued Hankook AS4 tires in my size they would sharply discount. Do I care they are discontinued? - not at all. So for about the price of Coker bias ply I got 3" whitewall radials. You can't beat that.
