This would be my suggestion, just to put your mind at ease. For $20 or $30 you would have a neato new toy too. I use mine on my aquarium and for checking food when I'm cooking. They are also very handy for checking the temp of brake drums and rotors.

My son in law is just about to take delivery of one of these. He opted for the diesel.

Yes, all radial and rotary (think WW1 not Wankel ) aircraft engines have odd numbers of cylinders because of the rod arrangement. There is a master rod and all the other rods are offset on the master rod. The cams are unique looking, just a large ring with lumps around the outer edge.
