Yesterdays Engine Compression Loss Thread?
55 Fargo replied to 55 Fargo's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
The thread 1950dodgefan started could have been re-titled as it was initially a request for parts, but immediately became an engine troubleshooting thread. The young OP, has expressed his frustration with the deletion of the thread, and understandably so. Now all of you "secret" complainers, why don't you add your post to this Young Lad, and explain why you offered no solution only condemnation. I don't think any of you with the exception of the above poster will do so, as he has justified his response on the deleted thread. this post in no way is to criticize the Moderators, as they have to enforce policy, and it no doubt becomes irritating to get Private Message complaints from several members, this I understand. -

Yes Lad, you have many valid points, and I will stand up and say, Sorry this happened to you on this forum, although I was in your corner on this one. Yup, you got a lot of things going on, and of course you want your"baby" back up and running right, hang in there, don't let this chase you off, there are plenty of Great Guys on this Web Forum, who will be more than happy to help you out. Yes, at 1 time, anything could be posted, all together, then the Website changed, this forum got a lot bigger, and new categories were created, so now if you are just looking for parts for example, we have a section dedicated for that purpose. Your Thread, was more than that, you have engine problems, and are looking for solutions and alternatives to get this engine running well again, or to find another if necessary. Now, try and shake this off, most of us want to help, so please start a new thread, and lets get to work on this. Hey you got lot to do, facing a new Military career, have you been to "Bootcamp" yet? Shake this one off, chaulk it up to an experience, and do not let these whiners turn you off of this place........... -
Yesterdays Engine Compression Loss Thread?

Yes Wally gotta agree, and I am sure many others would too. Now I am sure Tod or GGdad1951 were getting PMs from the Nanny's so I can understand it could be annoying and they have better things to worry about. I really felt this thread was put on a different path, and would have been considered appropriate for the Truck board. So the Original Poster, please hang in there, start a new thread with your "engine troubles" hopefully we can assist you in getting your engine diagnosed and repaired if possible. Once all avenues are exhausted, and then if necessary, you could put a "want ad" for another engine.....just my insight into this matter PS a message to all of you or those that felt the need to PM and complain, why don't you next time offer a solution, or add a post expressing your displeasure with the Thread Creator, instead of running and complaining to the Mods. -
Yesterdays Engine Compression Loss Thread?
55 Fargo replied to 55 Fargo's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
Oh okay, Yes the opening post was a query on buying an engine. The next several posts were a discussion on what is wrong with his engine, possible causes, and possible solutions. Perhaps after that there were off topic posts. I thought this was going to be a good learning thread for the OP, and it sure looked like his engine had a "head gasket" issue....thanx Tod -
Yesterday a Young lad in High School started a thread about his engine, at first it was a request for a replacement engine, which doesn't belong here. However after my post and as well as some others, it became clear he is having an engine problem, that we may be able to assist this Neophyte in getting running well again. What happened to the thread? Is it moved or deleted? I was hoping we could have helped resolve this New Member resolve the issue with his current engine. 1 other member offered no resolution, only that the initial theme was one in which belonged in the "Classified" section, which I agree, but it seemed to get right on topic, once we started to assist this lad with the symptoms he is currently having. Now I have looked for the thread, but could not find it.

Here is something that will intrigue as it has me and many others on this forum, http://p15-d24.com/topic/21640-the-great-hershey-road-trip-begins/page-2?hl=bamford#entry209470 http://p15-d24.com/topic/23867-bamfords-returnget-together-in-elko/?hl=bamford http://p15-d24.com/topic/24096-the-long-road-home-part-ii/page-9?hl=bamford#entry238805 http://p15-d24.com/topic/28444-arctic-adventure/?hl=arctic

Contact Tim Kingsbury on this forum ,or telephone George Asche ,as he does not do internet he may be able to pinpoint what you are looking for. Now there will be variances in head chamber CC as well as cam profiles for the 265 engine, depending on year and application. Have you determined CC volume yet?

Yup, these seats ain't built for long drive comfort, that is a given. Did you get any steaks out of the Deer deal?

Once read a story in Hemmings Classic car Magazine, 1948 Chrysler Biz Coupe owner and his buddy with buddys 49 Chrysler drive from the LA area to San Fran on New Years Eve, find the original owner of the 48 Chrysler Biz Coupe, and take him for a ride. Now how kool is that. After this they drive out to Yosemite, spend a couple of days there and head back to the LA area. This guy did this with a car he just bought, broke the speedo cable, lost a hub cap, and heater motor stopped. The original owner gave him the Dealer blanket he bought for the car to help keep him warm. They were cruising in the 60-65 range for the trip....

Tod and Greg, Plyroadking, thanx for sharing, always enjoy the road trip stories. LA and So Cal freeways, yes I guess you did just fine, just how fast is traffic moving on them these days. I would venture to guess not too fast when things get all jambed up and things begin to crawl. I had a couple of Pals years ago in Long Beach, 1 had a VW Bus, the other had a 64 Chevy panel, both would drive them down the freeways at 55-60 mph, and although there was a lot of traffic, they did okay, heck I did okay, as I was driving them too...

40Plymouth Bob started a thread in the Off Topic section, which has inspired me to create this thread on the main board. The main theme is all those Mopar Flathead 6 cylinder owners, whether it be in a Car, Truck, or what have you. Please post your details, plans and pictures, on how you propose to do a long road trip. if you have already done a long road trip, lets hear about them, all the trials, tribulations, adventure and intrigue. I have not done any trips over 50-100 miles in length, but hope to at some point, there will be those who have chosen the back roads of yesteryear, and those with modified flathead power cars, who have battled the Interstates and freeways along their path. GENTLEMEN START YOUR ENGINES|

Some interesting U tube videos, of the LA area in the 50s as well as other parts of the USA by road. Now all that traffic and freeway speeds in the 50s, and think, it was donne with Bias Ply Tires, and single pot master cylinder brake systems. Now speeds are no doubt lower, traffic not as wild and crazy as now, but still a lot of cars and trucks going up and down the roadways, to the tune of 1600 per hour per lane on 1 Los Angeles Freeway. What a time of growth and prosperity for the people of California, after WW2.....

Well it puts on a great show. Any engine that is carboned right up bad, needs the head removed forma thorough cleaning job....

Funny I was thinking about this today too. I pulled the Fargo out, let her warm up before going for a drive. Now it is cold here today, so could watch the exhaust going pu-puff every once in a while, while idling cold. No doubt some valve and seat issues, but nothing that bad, older engine. I have tried the water and the Seafoam down the carb, still idles the same way. The best remedy in my case would be a valve job or a rebuild. Think I have a rebuilt 265 in the wings, so would be going in next..

Ask Tod to move it if he hasn't done so already..

Considering selling my flathead
55 Fargo replied to Sparky52Dodge's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
All depends what "running" means. -recent rebuild? - low verified mileage? - well worn and tired? - miles but in decent mechanical condition? Anywhere from $200-$700. Is this a 218 original engine, worth less than a later 230, and certainly worth less than a 265 -
Bob, you could remove the head plug over the 6 cylinder, measure the stroke, which will be 4 5/8 for a 230 and bore is 3.25, on the 218 the stroke is 4 3/8 with a 3.25 bore.

Oxy acetylene torch, get the remains red hot to bust that rust. I would try this before a head removal, but if you need to do a head removal, head bolts can break. I have pulled a number of these heads never breaking a bolt, got lucky, but have broken plenty of manifold studs....

Compression readings and assessment

My apologies to the OP and the web forum, as the last few posts have gone ridiculously off the "Thread Topic". I hate hijacked threads, and see this as counter productive to the topic. Jeff whichever way you proceed, no doubt you will do it right, lot of good advice has been given, some advice is not ground in experience but opinions. Look forward to your plan of attack.... -

Yah your right, just for those who may not know, Winnipeg Capital region 800000 people, Brandon 45000 Virden 5000, hmmm which might have more traffic especially during rush hour in a downtown situation, tons of road construction, car accidents, city buses, bridges backed up, trains etc......LOL could be harder to drive in Brandon or Virden or the wide open spaces of the TransCanada Hwy.Maybe you just zip in once in a while from the North perimeter, to Route 90, and have not had to drive across it day in and day out, it's my home town, and am thankful every time I go to work, I do not have to drive through the city...maybe after 50 plus years, I am a bit of a pessimist.....LOL -

As I posted Flatland around here, but we have the traffic too, Winnipeg Capital region has 80 % of the total population of the province. There is some rolling land in many parts of the province, but not in my main driving territory so id don't count for me... PS many highways and freeways in Southern Ontario, are much bigger, with a lot more traffic. 4mula, you should feel lucky, your big cities to go to nearby are Brandon and Virden, a dream to drive around compared to Winnipeg at times...
