Herr Klaus greeting from Western Canada. I know in the past really cold winters in eastern europe and it was mild here. Germany's winter is not so bad as compared to the extreme northern US states and most of western Canada. Hope you keep your mild winter, and keep drivin your old truck....
-
Well Tim, it has been cold here for a lot longer than the Mayflower 1st arrived on the shores of North America, the Northern Sates have grown, and continue to grow, same thing with Canada, sure it's cold, but the economy is decent, and Canadas western provinces continue to thrive, especially Sask and Alberta. Sure we tolerate this in winter, and very few enjoy this type of cold, but we do not have earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, and very few tornadoes. Summers are hot and short lived, but you make the best of it. Cold places still retain their citizens, for example Minneapolis and Chicago, cold cities, big populations

If you have any air bleed brakes, gets things right. Your brakes, Mopar Lockheed also need to be adjusted to very close tolerances to be effective and for even brake shoe wear. On my 47 Chrysler I used to own, I followed Dodgeb4ya advice, and set the major adjusters as specified in service manual, and let brand new shoes wear in for a few thousand miles, with periodic minor adjustments. They were great, wore evenly. I sold this car to a vintage Mopar collector, he said they were the best most responsive old Mopar brakes He had ever had. When the shoes are new, they are not always concentric to the freshly machined drums, thus in the old days, they would grind off some of the material on the brake shoes with a special brake arcing machine, thus instant great it and brakes. Or you allow brakes to wear in for a while. Of course there is a special Ammco and Miller tool, that can dial in the adjustment very closely, I have a homemade device that does something similar, adjusting these brakes can sometimes be impossible without such a device.....good luck

looks like a universal unit, for those hotrodding I suppose, a few have done similar under the floor using there stock brake pedal. Most on this forum find the stock MC adequate if in good condition...

Hi Greg, there are 2 OD trans, an early model R7 and the sought after R10. yes it is a complete trans, but will bolt right up for you, then you need to do some simple wiring for engaging OD and kickdown. What are you running now, use this website to determine your RPM at 55 mph. http://www.4lo.com/4LoCalc.htm The Wife will not be used to these older engines, higher revving, noisy engine cooling fans etc. If you have a 3.9 diff and 27 inch round tires, you will be crankin pretty good rpm at 55 mph. Others have installed higher diff gears like 3.73s and taller rear tires, or installing later model diffs with 3.55 gears, they all make a difference... -
Welcome Hannu, sounds like a nice project you are starting. Canadian built 218 is a long engine, the same block for 228,237,251,265. Lots of parts readily available, enjoyed the pics.....Fred

I have a broken manifold on the bench, heat riser all intact and working. the exhaust manifold in truck, has heat riser seized in the warm position(not good in warm temps), the shaft is broken off, I have tried several times, to spin it forward, no such luck. Tomorrow picking up another manifold set, and will get ready to do the swap.....

now that should have been photographed and posted, almost as funny as you on the deck standing in snow. We could use a good laugh on a cold winter day

Hi all, today I am having a good case of "Cabin Fever", had to drive the old truck. Drove 4 miles for gas, then down highway, and some on the country roads around here, . In 1 pic the GPS is 43 mph, had her up to 55 mph, but with both hands on the wheel. Truck starts and runs excellent, rides and drives not bad, vibration at about 45-55 mph, those darn bias tires. The snow is super crisp and dry, as it is 10 below, with a 30 below windchill, heater works well, but with no insulation in truck, and some drafts, a little cool. I had fun on a cold winters day. I know some would cringe, but these trucks were meant to drive, even in the super cold, now my garage is warm, I would not do this, if truck was outside, mind you have a good working block heater....

Beauty, great car Casper, your scenery looks like around here...

Thanx Greg, good splainin. I realize a lot of the hop ups are both pleasing to the eyes and ears. I was just wondering what these hopped engines performed like in reality. The 251 engines in Canadian Dodge and Fargo trucks rate at 120hp, so not sure what exactly was done to accomplish the extra 4 hp. -

Don, i have seen videos of your car, of course it sounds great and appeared to go well on the way to Sonic Burger. I also recall the grin on Norm and Mary Milliners Faces, riding in your car. I also figure if you have added 30-40 hp in your engine, she must have some more punch than my stock 251 that's for sure.... -

Okay, glad you were able to visit George, and He is still well enough to receive visitors. My curiosity lately involves those who have hopped up 251 and 265 engines, my question is this, and will search out your threads later, here is the ?, how much more punch does George's hopped 265 move his car, as compared to what a stocker would do. In other words, is it more inline with lower hp V6 and V8 power? The big question, is Georges 265 got more guts than your hopped up 251 Don? -

Hi Don, tell you what if you pay the airfare, will book the time off, or how about I meet you there, make a day of it........LOL To be honest the word on the street is George is getting up there, not sure He is receiving visits or not. I am sure if He is feeling well these days, He would be open to phone calls and visits. PS you have been there, anything you want to report on your first hand experience... -

Would really like to hear from those who have met George, and who have had a drive in the hopped up 265. Just interested in how much more punch that car has with all of his mods done to it... -
Yes, that's true, but I have only experienced it when those ambient temps were near freezing point, very high humidity, either rain/sleet/snow. I have never experienced this in cold dry weather, that was my point. For example, yesterday it was 5 below, relative humidity 80% barometric pressure dropping, today it's 18f, 88% humidity, snowing would not happen today either. But if temp rises to 25 f, humidity rose to 98% with wet snow and rain, icing sure could happen. I used to have a 79 ford with an inline 6, that car liked to have icing conditions in carb, with high humidity and temps closer to freezing..

Who has had the privilege to meet George and go for a ride in His 265 hotrod flattie. I believe Coatney has, anybody else? I have read that it is quite a snappy little machine, how much more jam would it have over stock. I have spoken to George once some years ago, and enjoyed the conversation, I know He is getting up there in the years....
-
Carb icing is more common at temps right around 32f, most people run there vintage vehicles only in warmer weather up here, temps above 50f. So Heatrisers are not a big deal either... Only crazy frosties like me , drove there old trucks today in 5 below weather........LOL

True enough, the hole is on the right side bolt hole through center are of manifold..
-
Thanx Tim, to OP, did not mean to take this thread into another direction, apologize for that. Here is a pic of the manifold.
-
hey Tim, sometimes if it ain't broke don't fix it" rings true. I do like what others have done, but there are all things to consider, thanx for your input. A side note, I have a set of manifolds sitting on my bench, intake is separated from the exhaust, the heat riser is in good working order. But the exhaust manifold is got a break around 1 of the 2 bolt/stud areas on the very center of the exhaust manifold, would something like this be worthy of a repair, hence allowing me to use this set-up as per stock once again? I could post a pic of damage it anyone likes to see it.

True, no guarantee , buying headers right up front may be the better bet. I do know Rusty Hope does this job for less money, Canada [prices will always be higher, especially those outfits that may not really want the job in the first place..
-
Absolutely, but the throttle response must be evident. I would suspect shaving the head, would help with a little boost in this equation too..
