1939 Plymouth Convertible Top Cleaners.

Recommended Posts

Hello Folks.

Looks as if several years of simple garage dust has made the canvas top on my 39 convertible a bit dirty. I have tried a damp towel, and also a whisk broom lightly on it, but it still looks as if it has a dirt issue. What do you guys use to clean your tops when it simply becomes apparent that the above is not working?

I have heard horror stories in the past about products that leave behind a residue, or that leave the top streaky. I would rather leave it the way it is than to create another issue.

Thank you!

I have three rag topped cars, '39 Plym P-8, '57 T-Bird and a '03 Mercedes CLK 430.

The fabric on my '39 Plym is a three ply Mercedes fabric, the Bird has  conventional convertible fabric and the Mercedes has it's original Mercedes fabric.

I have used a product called RAGGTOPP, this product has been Tested And Endorsed by HAARTZ, reputedly the worlds leading manufacture of convertible topping fabric..

I just did an info search on RAGGTOP products, The cleaner and protectant, two separate containers are available from AMAZON for $40.17 including shipping.. The two containers will last for about three years if you only have one car.  Bill

We used an all purpose spray cleaner, scrub brush and wet vac to clean stubborn upholstery and convertible tops at the dealership.  Spray, agitate, vacuum, do small sections, repeat as needed.

Thanks Guys for your input.

The top is not too bad, but just did not want to make it worse by using plain "car wash" on it. I think I over think things sometimes....

I have found that far to many people "over think" things to much. As I noted in my earlier contribution to this thread, I have have plenty of experience with convertibles, had my first one in 1952, a '41 Ford. My experience has shown me to avoid leaving the top down for an extended period of time. Had a lot of heated conversations with my late wife about her leaving the top down with the car sitting in the drive way in lieu of the garage. A folded top can develop a serious fold pattern from the top being left in the folded position.
A good cleaner and the application of a good protectant is very important..  Bill
