48ply1stcar Posted May 26, 2013 Report Posted May 26, 2013 I see that Andy Bernbaum and Roberts are the same price, $24 for the front mount and $12 for the upper rear. Any recommendations? Also, I remember reading somewhere in the forum that the lower rear mounts aren't required. I've never had lower rear mounts on my car does anyone out there think It would they make a difference? P15-D24 Posted May 26, 2013 Report Posted May 26, 2013 You need mounts front and rear. If the rear ones are missing Also, I remember reading somewhere in the forum that the lower rear mounts aren't required. That statement is incorrect, you need front and rear mounts. If your rear mounts are missing the angle on the u-joint will be off. Quote
48ply1stcar Posted May 26, 2013 Author Report Posted May 26, 2013 Okay I wasn't clear. I have always had Upper Rear mounts. My question to everyone, does really make a difference to have Lower Rear mounts? Quote
_shel_ny Posted May 26, 2013 Report Posted May 26, 2013 (edited) Rock Auto shows a rear mount for 1948 Dodge. I would think it is the same for Plymouth, but I can not confirm that. $3.52 each Edited May 26, 2013 by shel_bizzy_48 Quote
P15-D24 Posted May 26, 2013 Report Posted May 26, 2013 Yes you need lowers otherwise the mounts will move up to an inch sideways. Quote
David Lechner Posted September 9, 2013 Report Posted September 9, 2013 I have a 1948 Plymouth club Coupe , An original car with 57,000 miles. I am attempting to replace the rear engine mounts. My car was built in December of 48 and did not have lower rear mounts, just upper. I have acquired and plan to install the replacement mount system as shown by Don. I have an overhead lift and was able to raised the engine until the transmission contacted the underside of the floor. I can't get enough clearance to install the upper rear mount assembly. Removing the drive shaft and transmission might give me enough space? There is a removable floor panel over the transmission that I would prefer not to disturb . I would probably have to remove the seat to remove this panel. It appears that I need about 2 1/8" total clearance to install the replacement upper rear mount and washer tube assembly. Any one know a proven procedure to get enough clearance to install replacement rear upper mounts? I did not plan to replace the front mount at this time, don't know it condition, but am concerned about what jacking up the rear of the engine might be doing to the front mount. Quote
Young Ed Posted September 9, 2013 Report Posted September 9, 2013 My car is a nov 48 build and it also doesn't have the lower rear mounts. I just swapped in an OD and I can tell you that you can remove the floor panel without removing the front seat. You do have to disturb the floor covering which in a low milage original might be tricky to do without destroying the rubber mat. I think it will gain you some but not a ton. If you pulled the parking brake band and mechanism I think that would give the trans a little extra height too. How much are you short? Quote
David Lechner Posted September 10, 2013 Report Posted September 10, 2013 I am short about 1/2" when the top of the transmission housing hits the bottom of the floor, not the parking brake It appears removing the transmission may give me the additional height needed before the bell housing hits the lower area of the fire wall ? If the engine was out of the car the clearance requirement would be less since the mounts could be recessed into the cross member holes. Quote
