Normspeed Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 I've been struggling with extremely slow page loads for months, using my dial up service Netzero. Sometimes it gets so slow I have to exit completely out and re-dial to unlock it. Hitting the escape key or the stop button will not stop a page download in progress. While Grandadeo was visiting, we installed another browser, Mozilla Firefox, so we could utilize a program that searches multiple Craigslists at once, very handy. Well today after another lockup, I decided to use Netzero only to gain internet access, then I opened Firefox and went to the P15-D24 site. I'm amazed at how fast this program is in comparison to the clunky Netzero browser. Pages come up almost instantly. I did need to login again using the remember me function, and now I am sold! Quote
steveplym Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 I've been using firefox for about 2 years now. A computer tech told me a few years ago about it. He said that pages will load faster and be easier to navigate. I also downloaded their e-mail program and quit using outlook express. Much better program and seems to have a bit more security. There are a few personal web sites I've gone to and have trouble loading the whole page, so I just use Internet explorer for that. Quote
John Mulders Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 Those pages are written by MS programs that don't comply to the Internet standards, MS is quite known for doing that. Firefox is a good program , you can import your old favorites from Internet Explorer as well. John Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 Does Firefox have a virus protection progrm (hopefully free)? The AVG I have been using is closing out the freebie item and want users to buy their regular program.. Signed....Mr Cheap Quote
Grandadeo Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 Hey Norm, any time I can help you with computer problems just let me know. By the way, my lap top is with the Geek Squad at Best Buy right now trying to get the wireless thingy working and doing 5 years of upgrades. A friend of mine did that for free on my PC the last time he visited Florida. When ya coming back. Lee Quote
bkahler Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 Friend of mine asked me if I had done the AVG upgrade to 8. whatever. Told him I had not because it seemed to be a pay thing. He said they also still had the free version in 8. whatever, but darned if I could find a free one. Here's the link to the new 8.0 AVG download. Its definitely better than the previous version. Been using AVG Free for years, wouldn't do without it. http://free.avg.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition Brad Quote
kevinanderson Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 If anyone is considering Qwest---Let me tell you it locks up alot. And you can sure tell when people hop on from the west coast. It really bogs down. Can't say I am all that pleased. But living in a rural area, within their "red" zone of service, it is the fastest I can get. I could go with wireless, but I don't want to invest in their equipment to receive. Their(or your) zone is no more than three miles from a Qwest substation. And I am on the cusp. Quote
Normspeed Posted July 6, 2008 Author Report Posted July 6, 2008 Using Firefox I notice when I type a message it shows up in a skinny font called Verdana on my screen. Is the font that you guys are seeing the same as in the other posts? Quote
greg g Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 been using crazy browser for a number of years (free version) it features may of the firefox items plus you can open multiple pages which it keeps as tabs on the top of the page. I currently have 7 open which I can retrieve just by clicking on the tab and refreshing. POP UP blocker is pretty effective. It rides on IE but cuts out a lot of the crap that ie allows. You can set up you page with many options as to type style, size etc. I am running off Road Runner and have had no issues especially with my newer computer. I tried fire fox but it blocks a lot of content especially imbedded pictures. Crazy Browser is a free download and is very easy to use. I would suggest it for any one using IE. Quote
