i have 4 used tranny's under my bench. from various cars..what years i dont know or rmember. how can i tell by looking at the outside, the year to which it applies applies.

i understand that the 1941 is best!!! second gear will wind out a bit more. true? most ratios were the same, except that 2nd gear.. true? i know they all bolt up ok.

any help? bill aka, claybill

in the absence of know application it would appear that taking the box cover off and counting teeth and doing the old division may be the only method to correctly identify your possibility of a fast second...for the record, my book shows that these fast seconds (1.55) were available from 36 through 40...the 41 was the first year for the standard 1.83 ratio that continued like forever...

Is this where we get into the discussion of the difference between quick and fast??? As in faster is really slower because it takes longer to reach the faster speed. So is a close ratio box faster than a wide ratio box or is not a wide ratio box actually slower while being able to go faster??????

Bill, on both my 53 transmissions there is a date stamped into the edge of the front flange where it bolts to the bellhousing. Very small stamping, and you'll need to clean the area well. I believe it was directly forward from the side shifter cover. You can barely see the stamping in this photo.

I found it....they are all 48's and a 50. #is stamped on base flange on rear, where it bolts up to the long snout part, not to the bellhousing.

but i hear that the 2nd gear i want is from a '40.

one of my plys will wind out in 2nd gear pulling all the way to 45...the other

is slow and poops out at 25.

my green coupe is so fast i am afraid to touch anythng!!!! well, you know what i mean. it tops out at 70 climbing a hill on local road! starting at 35 in high coming around bend at 35. pulls all the way to 70!
