sam knopik Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 Before I drop big money a the local tool supply center I thought I would ask you all about good brands. I'm looking for a good unit that I can put in my garage, not make a big mess, big enough for wheels, small enough to be affordable. I will need a compressor to go with it too. Any suggestions? Quote

Todd B Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 I feel Harbor Freight has crap! Pay more money and buy quality. My 2 cents. Quote
Tim Brown Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 I got one from this place a couple years ago and have been pleased. www.skatblast.com Quote
Reg Evans Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 I feel Harbor Freight has crap! Pay more money and buy quality. My 2 cents. My brother bought this one about 10 years ago and the piece of crap is still blasting away. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93608 This cheap pos has been working for me for a couple of years now http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=41108 Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 I bought a bench top model cabinet from Harbor Freight that has top opening, with the light inside several years ago. Haven't used it much myself, but my son has used it several times a year since I bought it. Was cheap but works great and still going. We only use glass beads in it. My only complaint with it is, its not big enough. We have to remember, we're not a production shop. Therefore, most of the time we can buy the cheaper model tools and they'll last forever. Quote
bob1949b Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 I bought the same floor model that Reg Evans posted from Harbor Frieght and have not had any problems with it. I have blasted lots of parts including rims and my son has used it also on his project. I agree Harbor Frieght sells some tools that dont last past the first use, however there is not much to go wrong with a rubber hose and gun, and I cant imagine what could happen to a steel cabinet but rust. I dont plan on opening a shop so it should last a long time. JMHO:D Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 if you are serious about what you are going to blast sizewise..for a few bucks more go with TIP and the Scatblast line..very large cabinets with lights, and vacuum exhaust etc..very reasonable overall...I have had my 5 foot wide unit for about 23 years...they offer a variety of sizes and are very well built (was when I got mine at least) Even a small blaster will eat your air consumption so a nice size compressor with good reserve is a must... wayfarer Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 Make sure, double sure, that you have more air available than what you will actually use. Most small compressors are not rated for continuous operation, they need 'off-time' for cool down. Check the data plate for air requirements noted as CFM. Ignore the HP wars that most retailers like to engage in because the motor size is determined by the pump size. Make comparisons based on 'xxx' cfm at 'xxx' pressure. Do not be surprised at how much air a blast cabinet consumes. Quote
rgsf1000 Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 Best bet for the hobbyist is the Skatblast cabinet. That's what I have and love it. Be sure to get a big enough 2 stage compressor to supply it. I also have a "TIP" pressure pot for really big projects. Quote
