Hey, I am working on a 53 1/2 ton B-4

If I read the service manual correctly, it states that I have to remove the front clip (both fenders) to take out the engine? What about the transmission, should I pull it as 1 whole unit or seperatly? Do I have to remove the steering box? Any suggestions?

Brian its certainly easier if you pull the front clip but I dont think its a required. If you do pull the clip then I would leave the tranny connected. Steering box can stay put.

As above, it's certainly easier with the clip removed. I recently pulled the motor from a '55. With the exception of the pedals, it's the same. A load leveler is a big help because you need to twist the motor as it's coming up and out.

I tried to remove the motor and transmission together on my truck. I found it was impossible to remove the motor and tranmission together with the 4 speed shifter in place. Maybe if it was on a lift , but on the garage floor there just isn't room as it's assembled.

When I pulled my engine, the fenders were off, but the nose/grill was still on. I pulled out the trans first, then picked out the engine/flywheel housing together, with pedals removed. I still had to tip and angle it a bit to get it around the steering gearbox.

As for the 4 speed shifter... When I pulled the trans out, I removed the cover with the shift lever before removal of the trans. Once the trans was out I put the cover back on. As I recall, I couldn't slide the trans back far enough to clear the clutch (I have a fluid drive which makes it longer) without the shift lever hitting the floor, so it had to go. I also had to jack up the front of the engine so that the tail would drop under the cross member. With Fluid Drive and a 4 speed, the park brake drum is right up next to the cross member.
