central52 Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 Has anyone painted their new exhaust system with a heat resistance paint? I know that rust usually works from the inside of the muffler and pipes, so painting the outside really doesn't stop that, but I'm curious if anyone has painted their exhaust pipes and muffller anyhow. falconvan Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 I've painted headers but never had much luck with longevity, always seems to burn off after a short time. Quote
Don Coatney Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 My exhaust system is all aluminumized except for the mufflers. It should last longer than me. Quote
YukonJack Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 Several years ago I put headers on a 66 Chevy truck I had. I was told that using a vht paint (red, yellow or orange) on the inside would prevent them from rusting from the inside out. Something about oxide in these colors. Don't quite remember. Quote
cwcars88 Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 I use (Eastwood) stainless steel hi-temp coating, $24.99, #103642. I have over 10,000 miles on on that manifold and still looks good. Wayne Quote
Don Coatney Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 If we are talking manifolds I have over 14,000 miles on this one with high temp spray paint. Quote
Guest rockabillybassman Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 I think that longevity of hi-temp paint comes down to prep, same as any paint job. Mine is coming off, but I just gave the manifold a quick wire brush. Probably if I had prepped it properly it would last better. Or it could be the chicken poop that was all over my manifold when I got it. LOL!!!!! Quote
bobby horne Posted April 19, 2008 Report Posted April 19, 2008 I used barbeque grill paint. It has held up pretty well several years now on the exhaust pipe......Silver or black is the only colors I have seen.......... Quote

When I got my manifold from George Asche it had his famous red paint. I had it sand blasted to remove the red and painted it silver right out of the blasting cabinet. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 19, 2008 Report Posted April 19, 2008 you may laugh..but regular ole Rustoleum rusty metal primer will stick on them pipes ...worked good on motorcyle headers... Quote
