Guest Nile Limbaugh Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 Here in Georgia they won't even issue a title for a car older than, I think it is, 20 years. They just use a bill of sale and the registration. Quote
Young Ed Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 That really messes us up. In MN a bill of sale means nothing. Then they make you post a bond for the value of the vehicle. The title for my truck ended up costing me like 150 bucks! Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 As Nile mentioned, no title will be issued even if titled from another state at time of purchase. Other states have to reciprocate and honor this law..bill of sale from Georgia and a copy of the registration show it was registered in sellers name and instant title in another state...it is the registeration that is the key...otherwise you may have to post the bond..and further the state may request that a uniform officer inspect the car's body number against bill of sale and sign a verification letter that it matches. We have to do this here in Georgia when a car sales without a valid registration card. No bond however..just went through this with the 54 Plymouth.. I know some states are very hard to deal with..personally I think if I have the title and wish to pay the fee, I should get my car titled and as how it is written here in GA that you can back to late 50's I think, they still will not do it even if you request..Georgia did not issue titles until 1949 or 50 area. thedahmer Posted December 6, 2006 Author Report Posted December 6, 2006 Here is Illinois- if you don't have a title it is a MAJOR headache!! you have to deal with the BOND issue Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 They use titles here in Missouri. They can issue a "builder's title", I think it's called. You have to get the car together, have bills of sale for the major components....body, engine....then take it to a highway patrol station for their inspection. Not sure what that title says when you get it or how it identifies the car for a model year. Better than nothing, I guess. Quote
Lou Earle Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 Georgia did not a a certif. of title law until the 60's about 61 i think. No car in GA had a title prior to this time only a certif of orgin was needed from the dealer to get the first registration and tag. Therefore Georgia does not issue any title to any car before the 60's because they never did . Lou Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 And here we have it..thanks Lou..I knew the cut off was about that time but SC DMV advised me that if I wanted to get a '49 car from Georgia that bill of sale was all that was needed and they SC would issue a title to me as it is Georgia law they have to respect...so I did and they did..and all is well with the world..got that piece for the Plymouth Lou..it is fantastic...one less item on my list and the list is getting shorter... 55 Fargo Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 Manitoba , requires only a bill of sale for vehicles 1976 and older. In fact I registered my 48 Chrys,( it's actually a 47) yesterday. I had no bill of sale, just my serial number, make and model. I had to sign a declaration form, they did a search on the vehicle, it came up clear, it was free, then I registered the car with storage insurance, it has $100.00 deductable, good up to $50000.00, covers theft, vandalism, fire etc. It is $56.00 per year. I still require a DMV Safety certificate to put her on the Road, insurance and registration for that is $500.00 per year. We have public only insurance in this province for Motor Vehicles, they made a profit and they keep the price of insurance at a reasonable rate. Winnipeg City is the car theft capital of Canada, so the price for car insurance in the city is higher........Fred Quote
Guest Paul G (Dr Vinyl) Posted December 7, 2006 Report Posted December 7, 2006 I just bought 30-- 46-48 mopar titles-- 48 desoto convertible, plymouth coupe sedan and wagon. dodge 8 passenger coupe and sedan--the guy has 40K more- would like to sell them all to me- but it is BIG $$ Except for nostalgic reasons...what good are old titles without a vehicle? Here in Indiana it is easier to obtain a title with a bill of sale than transfer a title with numbers that don't match the vehicle. Quote
thedahmer Posted December 7, 2006 Author Report Posted December 7, 2006 well in some instances if a car is rare or hipo a title is invaluable-- in Illinois and some other states it is a pain for title when dealing with bonds and such-- some are just cool to frame and hang on the wall- Quote
