Joe Flanagan Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 Here are a couple of pictures of what I think is called the clutch torque shaft (or something like that). I'm replacing the bearings in both ends and I'm wondering if there is any kind of retainer or anything that holds them in place. When I removed the old bearings there didn't seem to be anything holding them. They just pushed out. It just seems a little odd to me that they would just slip into place and not be held by anything. Anyone familiar with this contraption? Rodney B: We talked about this last time you were at my place. Didn't you replace these bearings in one of your cars? Quote
Young Ed Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 I will tell you 100% that nothing holds them in. I know from experience! We have a couple old cars at the cabin and if we head out for sat night dinner will usually take one of them. So during the day sat we changed the oil and did the chassis greasing. Yours truly did the greasing and put a little too much in that fitting that greases those bearings. So now the car is running and we are all in it to go eat. Dad pushes the clutch pedal in and it makes a thump and falls to the floor. I overgreased that piece and made it all fall apart! Quote

As far as the pins and eyes go, what am I looking for in the way of imperfections? Are you referring to cotter pins or the peg-like things you show in your last picture, the things with the holes in them for the cotter pins? Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 Joe, I remember when Dodgepu46 had his mishap, I had my clutch assembly on the bench. He greased it under load thats why it pop out. Don is using a very modern era grease, the red color gives it away. He may never have to grease it again. I mentioned to you that nothing holds them in. If I remeber once you bolt it down in it's place it doesen't move, everything is in it's place. I remember when they poped out for you it was because you kept pulling on the pivot ball. That pic that don showed you is a very good one. If you need to look at the assembly first hand then the junk yard car 5 miles from us will tell the story. That's why junk yards are important they show you how the car went together:D I smell a trip coming on. Quote

Joe Flanagan Posted February 25, 2008 Author Report Posted February 25, 2008 The same is probably true of the control arm bushings because when I greased those, I coudn't see any grease coming out and I couldn't understand why it wouldn't take any more. Quote

I would like to go back to the same color, or something close to it. Do you have pictures of your 51? If you saw pictures of mine when I first started you would be encouraged. I would imagine the worst part of yours is the floor and rockers, correct? Quote

The seat started to fall through and has 2x4s under it to hold it up. Pete,My part also has those little grooves that look like they would hold clips but there were no clips there. I'll see if I can get my camera up under the car and shoot a pic... I searched through my archive of photos, but couldn't find a shot of that part. I do remember removing the part, cleaning up all the pieces and sand blasting them, putting them back together and in a zip lock for storage. Pretty sure there were two wire clips, one for each of the ends of the housing. Pete Quote

Young Ed Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 The front is the one decent part. The floor and trunk are what are toasted. Car has 202K miles on it! I did score a set of outer rockers on ebay for I think $25 and dad had a 50 parts car with a very solid trunk in it. Only piece that will probably be a challenge is that removable floor section. If I get that far I will have to make or buy one. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 Here is a picture of one of those Torque shaft spring clips that are missing on a lot of old Mopars! I think maybe 2 are used but cannot remember for sure. With 2 installed if there are 2 grooves, the engine side 1/2 bearing halves won`t pop out when greasing the torque shaft! Bob Quote
