Jim Shepard Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 Well, I guess I'm going to have to abandon my quest for a triple carb setup on my Pilothouse. I finally got around to doing some measurements yesterday and it doesn't look like a third carb will clear the firewall without fabricating that back intake runner in a way that looks really asymetrical and out-of-balance. Then it looks like it would run into the middle carb. I'm guessing the reason there are three carb manifolds for the 250 and bigger engines is because these engines were in vehicles that had a flatter firewall, whereas the Pilothouse firewall is recessed where the block fits in. So, if the intake runner comes straight out from the block it hits the firewall. Too bad - I really like the looks of a triple setup... Quote
Young Ed Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 Jim what about a triple intake where the carbs are on tubes that curve up and sit above the head? You might fit one of these in there. Bloody knuckles has one on his 51 on the car side. Quote

You might fit one of these in there. Bloody knuckles has one on his 51 on the car side. In order to get the back carb to fit I'd have to actually bend the runner toward the middle carb (unless I bend it up and over the head and sit right over the head). To do that I would have more bends in it than I'm looking for (the runner would actually be an 'S' shaped intake). At that point I defeat the whole purpose of the triple carb setup, which is to have the intake runner shoot as straight as possible into the intake port and to have all three of them 'tuned,' i.e., same length and same bend. Look at the firewall of a Pilothouse and you'll see what I mean. As I said, I suspect the car firewalls are a little flatter and uniform across. Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 Ever thought about using side draft carburetors? Remember failure is not an option! If you want 3 then get three. Quote
1940Mopar Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 I've got a resource that can probably do something for you. here is the dual intake he made for me. I should have it soon to take better pics. Also here is a link to a site with some of his work. I haven't bolted it up yet, but i've heard nothing but positive things about his work from members on the HAMB. http://homepage.mac.com/rmccombs/StumblinIdles/PhotoAlbum49.html Quote
Young Ed Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 Jim what about a tube manifold patterned like a slant 6 intake? Quote
Vintrader Posted February 16, 2008 Report Posted February 16, 2008 How about this set up? Saw it on a little pick up a few weeks ago out here in Arizona. Dutch Quote
Jim Shepard Posted February 17, 2008 Author Report Posted February 17, 2008 How about this set up? Saw it on a little pick up a few weeks ago out here in Arizona. Dutch That's what I had in mind. I can't tell if it would work. As I said, when I took measurements, my firewall seems to be in the way of where the back carb would be. Do you know who manufactured the intake manifold in the photo? Yeah, who manufactured it? is it just for the short block? long block? Quote
Thunder II Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 Just a thought... Why not have three matching runners, that go forward? Quote
Reg Evans Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 Jim, Have you seen this thread on the car side?http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=7874 Reg Quote

It's an interesting setup. I'm not sure I'm ready for a "ram" manifold, though. It may be the only way to do a triple carb setup. Quote
