Trunk lock tragedy...need help/advice.

Got the bad news from the locksmith that rekeyed the trunk lock cylinder that the part that sticks out from the back of the cylinder into the trunk lid had broke off when he was trying to remove the cylinder from the latch housing. (See pics below)

This is how it should look. (it's broken here but I just put it together for the pic)

Here you can see what happened. The half circle piece is what broke, which kept the long metal piece with the small piece that comes out of one side to the cylinder and allowed it to once lock the trunk. The other half of the circle is still on the cylinder.

My question would be does anyone know how this can be repaired or where I can get another cylinder with the long piece (I don't know the technical name for it) already assembled to it like this used to be. (I looked at Andy B's site already and he has it, but for $85 (ouch!) Can we do better than that?)

I got a new ignition barrel from Andy B 'cos my old one kept sticking. His product was first rate, so it could be money well spent. Mitchell Motor Parts may have it.

What's that made of? Could be you could braize it. If that fails, JB Weld is some very tough stuff. Lock-Tite also makes an adhesive, comes in a green tube, just like the thread lock stuff that comes in the red tube. A machinist told me that he's used it to lock in bearing races that aren't tight.

Darin,

I may have one here without keys, I will have to check my parts boxes, it would be from a 48 Chrysler though, which should be the same. It is about $20 here to have it picked and a new key made. I will send you a PM later to let you know if interested.

Someone in the LA are must have one laying around, even without keys, a good locksmith can pick the lock and then safely remove the cylinder..............Fred

I agree with Fred. That's how they made a new key for mine. If his cylinder will fit, I'd go that way. If not, I'd find another used complete assembly and then remove the cylinder. Would be cheaper than buying the cylinder from Andy or Mitchell.

It looks to be made of brass. So I don't know how that would weld or how the adhesive would take to it.

That's fine, just PM later and we can talk more about it. Take care.

Have you contacted Mike Maker our in house lock man?

No, come to think of it...he's seem to have fallen off the face of the Earth, in a sense. I had his email address, but don't anymore. I can try to email him through the site. Thanks for that info.

47Heaven,

If you call Andy B on that he will tell you he has no more, (He's got no more souce for them) I have pesterd him a couple of times for the same part about a year ago and he sounded bothered by my attempts.

He might have changed that (turned that situation around as of late however).

Tom....that's why I really haven't wanted to deal with him because of his "I'm mightier tho art" attitude. The guy acts like he's the only one on earth with this stuff. I don't like his "no refund" policy, even if the item is wrong or broken when it arrives.

Darin, if the re-keying went ok, the broken part looks repairable, at least until you can find a good used one. JB Weld is my middle name.

Well, Norm, maybe we can put on the list for this coming weekend. I did go ahead and order the heater control valve from that place, so hopefully it's here by then. I really have to get these wipers working correctly before there is any driving in the rain, as well as the cowl vent rubber gasket.

if your not in a real big hurry, let me look in my 'parts' pile for the one that came out of my ' 48 Dodge (chopped), it should be all there, and I may not be using it, cause I 'm not sure what latch I'm going to use....hoping to use some kind of electric.... I don't know for sure yet..............it may a while before I get to that

I've got an electric wiper motor and all the fixins from a '47 Desoto if anyone is interested. Email or PM me if you want more info.
