Need one for my 49 Suburban. Like the one pictured below. I could also use some 49 Plymouth bumper bolts. Have dollars to trade. Thanks.

Reg pretty sure I have one on my extra 49 bumpers. Will look. Front plates are uncool in MN so its up for grabs.

Do the 48 Ford bumper bolts have the same size head? That would be great if they do......the 49 Plymouth bolts are even more pricey.

You can get the oval bumper bolts from just about any old Ford vendor. Just ask for the oval bolts that held on the 48 Ford bumpers. You will need about $6 each to trade.[/quote']

Norm,

Do the Ford bolt heads follow the curvature of the center rib on the 49 Plymouth bumper? The are not only oval but are concave on the back side.

Reg & Johnny,

I think they are more or less flat. I used them to mount my re-chromed 48 bumper and they look as good as the originals. I only have one on the rear from when I removed the trailer hitch that was on the car when I bought it. The head is just slightly smaller, but not enough to notice unless you really look at two right together. I don't have a spare one laying around, but I'll take a picture of one on my front bumper and post it sometime over the weekend.

Might be worth 6 bucks to try one a 49 bumper.

Thanks Tim, I Googled 37 DeSoto and this photo came up of a 37 DeSoto bumper. It looks like these bolt heads are too oval for the 49 Plym. Picky aren't I.

No..not picky..just wanting the right stuff..I cannot recall the 49 that clear in my head..are these diamond shaped..and are they 3/8 threaded..I have a couple like described laying around somewhere...cannot recall the application though...just in a tin car at the house.

Bumper Boyz...they may have your bolt also..you can call them 1-800..go to their web page for the number...

They seem to have one heck of a collection when I see them set up at the show..

Tim, I don't think Bumper Boyz has the bolts. They always have a booth at a couple of shows here in Wisconsin too. I tried to buy the oval bolts for my 48 a couple of times from them at the shows. They kept telling me they didn't carry them. That's why I went to the Ford vendor for them. Of course, I haven't checked with them in the past 2 or 3 years, so they could sell them now, don't know.

Reg, like I said the Ford heads are a little smaller, especially when compared to those in the picture of the 37 DeSoto. I'll get that close up picture for you hopefully sometime tomorrow.

Reg, here are the Ford oval bumper bolts. First picture is the same one in my profile. There you can see the bolts from a distance. The other three are different angle close ups. If you like these, I think I may have the part number stashed away someplace and I'll check. As you can see in the first close up, it fits the bend in the P15 bumper nicely.

Reg I tried to get the one off my 49 bumper and its currently stuck. I got that center bolt undone but the bracket on there wraps around to the back side of the bumper and goes under the bumper brackets. Of course the other bolts holding the bumper bracket on wouldn't come off!

I'll get it eventually :) I just wanted to take a second look at the picture and make sure you hadn't found one somewhere else. Do the 49 bumpers have a small cutout in the bottom for this bracket?

Posted

Yes Ed. I just went out and felt under there and found a notch a few incles long by about ~1/4" deep.

Ok this is probably the correct deal then. Will try more tonight. I only have propane to heat it with so I might have to haul it to dads to bring out the big heat.

Good luck getting that bolt out in one piece Ed. When I removed the one on my rear bumper that held the trailer hitch on, I had to cut it off. When I removed the old front bumper, had to do the same with all those bolts too. I tried heat, penetrating oil, air ratchet and impact wrench. The impact wrench did loosen the front ones, but.........then they just twisted in the hole in the old bumper. Had to use a small cutoff wheel for the nuts. The nuts I couldn't reach from behind I had to cut the heads off from the front, either with the cutoff wheel or the grinder. That's why I had to buy all new bumper bolts for the front and the one in the rear. Had to do the same when I removed my rear bumper guards too.

I don't have any problems cutting the bolts but on the 49-54 plymouths the bumper guards have a stud in them and if you wreck that you pretty much wrecked the guard. I suppose a new stud could be welded in but I'd rather not let it get to that.

Ed, I wasn't aware of the stud. That does present a problem. However, like you said, it has to come off somehow. It can always be drilled out and a bolt put through it like the other models, or a new stud welded in. Gotta do whatever it takes.
