My son just returned from Iraq, many thanks to all of you who mailed him, and sent him magazines. He has a pocket full of money and promptly bought a Ramcharger truck to build as a toy. He wants a 340 engine, might consider a 360. Ideally a runner, but a good builder is ok. Also need dress up stuff, valve covers, intake, exhausts etc. Thanks, as always.

340's are hard to come by now..price is also up there a bit..do what mother Mopar did with the E58 Interceptor engine...340 goodies on the 360 block and get the performance plus a substancial increase in torque..an in the case of the Ramcharger..torque is nice..I like my Ramcharger...super smooth driver..bet turning radius for that style vehicle..

340 is more on the oldskooool hype side nowadays. Overpriced because of it's legendary reputation, but there's actually plenty of more reasonable builds awailable if you are not restoring a numbers matching multidollar 340 e-body.

I would definately go the 408cid stroker route despite the need, street or strip, if SBM is the baseplant. Give it a thought, the whole kit with NEW crank, NEW rods, NEW pistons, NEW bearings, balanced etc. runs less than $1500,- for example in Ohio Cranks or dozen other places. DIY or ready to run you name it, hard to beat hp and tq combined into proven reliability.

Add another $1500,- in form of Edelbrock RPM alu heads on top of that shortblock and that truck will fly the streets with all NEW motor and less investment, than an tired 340 which is great engine, but not worth those bucks anymore.

Damn did I sound like I sell these... well I don't. I just have built several FAST mopar SB's, both 340 and 360, up to +600hp so they kind of grow on me;)

I built a 340 for my Lil Red Express Clone, but only because I had it laying around.

340's are getting seriously hard to find, and they are big bucks for no good reason when you get one. If I didn't have mine, I would have built a 360. 360's are easy to find, and they make a lot more torque than a 340, which is what a truck needs.

But, for the right pile of money, I would sell this one...

I'll even make it easier; just buy the whole truck!

I'll sell!

I've got a 360 out of a '75 Dodge truck. I was told it ran before removal, but needed carb work. Other than that I don't know much about it. However, unless he's close to SE Wisconsin, it's probably not feasable for him.

Hola and Ah Ho Ho Ho Charles

I would like to first say that we are all glad that you have an son that came back.

The second is to say that his choice of an RamCharger is an good thing.

From What you are asking, I feel that he has LA 318 in the truck now. What year is it ???

The exhaust manifolds on the 318 and the 360 are the same part number. Have him take it to the nearest neighbor hood/ non national muffer shop. Ask for a set of pipes the same inside diam as the exhaust pipes. The passenger side pipe goes to an dual in-let muffler and the driver's side "snakes" over to the remaining in-let ( these have an opening to permit the header pipe to use the same diam opening on the out-let side ... no reduction of flow through size ). The same diam from the exhaust manifolds is still used to the end of the single tail pipe. There is no longer an "Y" pipe and it is just like an OEM Exhaust that MoPar has in their truck exhaust books. The power just went up and the MPG figure's are at an better number.

This is the start to an better performing Dodge RC.
