Jims50chrysler Posted December 9, 2007 Report Posted December 9, 2007 I am looking for the part # off the seal or a napa part # for a pinion seal for my 50 Chrysler rear end I would expect that they are the same for Dodge or plymouth the only thing that I could find on it was "standard" my parts guy says he has a listing for a 1951, think they would be the same? thanks in advanve for your help Jim Quote
Normspeed Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 Hi Jim, I looked in my Hollander book and although it's not always 100% right, it says all Chrysler 42-52 6 cyl, 7 & 8 passenger sedan limo and station wagon, and the 8 cyl except Imperial used the same interchange number for rear axle carrier assemblies. I guess they might have changed internals like the pinion seal along the way, but the 51 seal will probably do it. Quote
Jims50chrysler Posted December 10, 2007 Author Report Posted December 10, 2007 Thanks Norm I will order one today and let everyone know what I get....it lists the same seal from 1932 to 1954 in the Kanter catalogue. Jim Quote
Normspeed Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 When I rebuilt my OD, the rear seal the supplier sent was different from what I removed, but it was correct in the two important areas, I.D. and O.D., so I used it. Turned out to be better than original because it allowed me to position the seal in the case so it rides on a fresh unworn area of the shaft. Quote
Jims50chrysler Posted December 11, 2007 Author Report Posted December 11, 2007 Well I got a pinion seal today.....it's not the right one even though the listing says it is for those years, I suspect they are for the limo and such as it is larger than the one that I need. For refrence it is a Federal Mogul seal part #413469 and the dimensions are 2.125 X 3.350 X .375 when I do get the right one for my car I will post the part number in this thread. BTW my seal dimensions are 1.875 X 3.125 X .375 Jim Quote
Normspeed Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 Hope your parts guy will give you a credit on the return. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 Exactly what year/model of car do you have? I`ll look it up in my seal books. Bob Quote
Jims50chrysler Posted December 11, 2007 Author Report Posted December 11, 2007 Hi Bob I have a 50 chrysler windsor club coupe with the fluid drive transmission. Jim Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 The rear axle pinion seal for your car (model C48) is the same as for a Plymouth/dodge or DeSoto 6 cyl. car. Chrysler 8 cylinder cars are different as are long wheel base cars ie. 8 passenger sedans or limo`s and all station wagons. They use a bigger OD seal. The original Mopar part # for your C48 6 cyl. Windsor is a # 663602. The old National part# is 5851. The current replacement Chicago Rawhide (CR) # is a #18880. Replacement seals usually look a little different in width and appearence. The OD of the seal is usually about.005-.010" larger than the bore dia. for the press (sealing) fit.Good luck! Bob Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 I forgot to tell you all this is assuming the rear end is the original factory installed axle! Bob Quote
Jims50chrysler Posted December 11, 2007 Author Report Posted December 11, 2007 thanks Bob I will throw these numbers out to my parts guy today...I am sure this will help a lot Jim Quote
Merle Coggins Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 When I recently swapped out the diff in my truck with one I got from Normspeed ('50 Plymouth?) I changed out the pinion seal for added security. The old seal had has a "CR" and "663602" stamped into it. I called my local Napa and gave them that number as a Chicago Rawhide number. They crossed it with no problem and I had a seal the next day. It was a thinner, newer style seal, but it fit perfectly. Unfortunetly I don't have the Napa number handy anymore. But if you give them the CR 663602 number, they'll be able to cross it for you. Merle Quote
Jims50chrysler Posted December 12, 2007 Author Report Posted December 12, 2007 Yes Normspeed my part guy takes returns ...even if it's my fault (it has alot to do with how much money I give him every year ) Thank you all for you help on this topic the seal that I got (the right one) is a Federal-Mogul part #473240. JIPJOBXX Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 Got a question??????????? I recently order a pinion seal and with you guys talking about this I just checked mine and I think they gave me the wrong size seal. The shaft size on the pinion gear shaft is 1 3/8" and I just noticed the inside dia of the seal is about 2 inches. This differently does not fit the shaft at all. Here is the parts number 18880 and manufactured by SKF of the present seal that I have with me now. Does anyone know the shaft size on the pinion gear shaft?? Just don't want to get myself into a can of worms without having the right parts to replace the old ones. Jon Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 The shaft size of the 6 cyl. rear axle drive shaft flange is 1.875". I just measured a 1949 plymouth rear driveline flange. The 18880 should be the correct one. As all the replacement seal books and online catalogs get updated there is the chance these #`s could be wrong! I just found out I have 4 of the 8 cyl. rear pinion seals- Mopar#619129 -no modern replacements available-so I`m lucky to have these, and no 6 cyl. smaller seals- so now I`m on the hunt too for a couple of these pinion seals too. My 1952 Belvedere rear pinion seal is leaking bad. Bob Bob Quote
