I did, yesterday - no vacuum. The cloth diaphragm has multiple large holes on the inside, oh well... 🙄 I adjusted the idle timing to 19in Hg, the car runs great, but am still curious about how it would work with the advance unit in place and working. Already ordered a NOS replacement. Not sure how long it will last, though.

With non-functioning vacuum advance is the engine hard to start? I assume the spring on the advance is still functioning. So probably starts fine.

Well vacuum advance is not applied during starting nor is it applied at idle. And typically when you're doing all your adjustments, that is at idle so no big effect. What it does is help keep the spark plugs clean get you better gas mileage cruising down the highway and it does lower emissions as well although that's not why they used it originally.
