50PlymouthSled Posted November 26, 2007 Report Posted November 26, 2007 Anyone have any idea what I might have in my 50 Plymouth? It's got the stock rear end. Not sure what the gear is though. I'm putting in a 318 and 904 Trans. So was gonna switch out the gears if need be. Quote
billwillard Posted November 26, 2007 Report Posted November 26, 2007 Just chane it. Find something in the low threes unless you want to drag race. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted November 26, 2007 Report Posted November 26, 2007 being a 50..the ratio is stock at 3.9 and only in the hilly country was a 4.1 an optional rear gear...find it stamped in place by brushing the passenger side of the hog head or the very top boss of the hog head.. Number of gears you can fidn to swap out..most however will require removal of your old leaf mounts and reweld to your donor unit in proper position to match the spring width and also take care to match your pinion angle..if transplanting a 318 or even better the 3.9 V6 as no firewall, rad support change will be required. The Dodge Dakota is a very good swap..see previous forum thread of last week on ratio available..hood tag will denote ring gear size and ratio. 318 and early A500 or A518 will give you 4 speed OD with just a override switch to connect to lock out...check with truck, ramcharger or van for this combo...very sweet setup..I just returned from a 1400 mile trip through the mountains pulling 5000 lbs both ways...OD was great...some idiot stopped traffic at foot of Monteagle so had to start without a running go..still topped the hill at 60 mile per hour..3rd gear... 50PlymouthSled Posted November 26, 2007 Author Report Posted November 26, 2007 Cool. Thanks guys. I ran a 3.93:1 in my Dart Swinger and a 3.73:1 in my Truck, so I was tryin' to figure out a good setup. But all the info is appreciated very much so! Quote
50PlymouthSled Posted November 26, 2007 Author Report Posted November 26, 2007 Also, I was thinking about keeping the stock rear end, a friend of mine said to switch out the axle to b body axles and it should be okay. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted November 26, 2007 Report Posted November 26, 2007 yes..I did not say B-body as they are getting harder and harder to find and priced as such... Quote
50PlymouthSled Posted November 27, 2007 Author Report Posted November 27, 2007 Ah, okay. Thankfully he has a junkyard of random crap. Which he has allowed me to have at to make my car and keep it all Mopar. So I have access to those axles. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted November 27, 2007 Report Posted November 27, 2007 sounds like you have a nice setup working to your advantage...given the same deal I, like you, would opt for a B-body 8 3/4 gear..and I would look for anything between 2.88 and 3.23 if not using the OD..the 2.88 would be a good gear for the road..it is what the police interceptors used..yeah..not a puller off the line but cruise high speed/low RPM all day... Quote
50PlymouthSled Posted November 27, 2007 Author Report Posted November 27, 2007 Yeah, what 'bout a 3.55:1 gear? So I have some pull off the line and still decent highway cruiseabability. Good choice? Quote
kencombs Posted November 27, 2007 Report Posted November 27, 2007 A 3.55 with an A500 would be near perfect. IMO Quote
50PlymouthSled Posted November 27, 2007 Author Report Posted November 27, 2007 Yeah, but the problem is I've got one transmission at my disposal which is a 904. Well actually, I have seven of them to choose. Haha. The A500 is a four speed correct? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted November 27, 2007 Report Posted November 27, 2007 keep in mind that the Chrysler 5th Ave while no rocket by any means was still a nice car..decent pickup with good cruise..its rear gear was a 7 1/4 inch 2.32 (15 inch wheels) hooked up to the 318 and 904....and that is about as slow off the line as Chrysler ever put together...had one once..for a daily driver...did real well...with gas going up...time to rethink the burning of tires if you are going to drive it considerablily..mine have V power and auto matic trannies.. so the ability to come off the line is not hindered Quote
50PlymouthSled Posted November 27, 2007 Author Report Posted November 27, 2007 Yeah, that's true. With the way of gas...hah. It's the only car I have. I got a picture of two of it. I have to fix the chop on it. Now sure how to post them in here. But if I can, I'll show ya a picture from the back. Quote
50PlymouthSled Posted November 27, 2007 Author Report Posted November 27, 2007 Okay, one more question with you guys regarding the rear end. A friend who is helping me get my car all finished has told me he believes the old style 8 3/4" rear ends are a 18 spline. So to covert to a different gear would I need to switch out center sections as well as run different axles? If this is the case, would I be better off using a different A or B body 8 3/4" Rear with a 30 spline and 3.55:1 all ready? Quote
kencombs Posted November 27, 2007 Report Posted November 27, 2007 I think you can swap axle gears and maybe thrust blocks between these. I have an older Hollander and will check later but I'm almost positive that is the case. I put a center section (3.55) out of a 55 Chrysler into a 65 Dart GT (273 w/4 speed) years ago. I used the Dart axles, side gears and thrust block in the older rear. Quote
50PlymouthSled Posted November 27, 2007 Author Report Posted November 27, 2007 Hm, okay. Yeah if you can check, that would be great. I'm not too up on the old style, more the newer style. Quote
