It smokes from time to time burned oil.

Joecoozie beat me to it.   It's the Sisson automatic choke.  A wire from the starter solenoid is live only while the starter is running.  This partially closes the choke plate.  A bimetallic strip in the Sisson also partially closes the choke plate.  The heat from the manifold opens the choke.

I have attached a copy of the sisson choke manual on how to set this up on your car.  I know alot about these old sisson chokes so write to me if you have questions.

A factory shop manual for any car with the Sissons choke will also explain how to set it properly. I have two cars with Sissons chokes and the chokes work perfectly if set as directed.
