lostviking Posted June 2 Author Report Posted June 2 Oh, one quick note, the linkage. The way it's shown in the picture won't work with the stock truck linkage. I rotated the arms to the carbs sort of 180 on the shaft so that when the bell crank pushes up and rotates the main shaft CCW (in this view), it opens the carbs. There is basically 90deg of movement at the carb throttle shaft from idle to WOT, so the two arms sit at 45deg to each other. I'm going to measure the total movement of the stock linkage at the stock bell crank, then do some math to decide what my new bell cranks arms need to do, along with that "long" arm you see to rotate the main shaft. IDK if I'll use it but just cutting off the extra after the bend, or weld it back after cutting it...I think it will need to be straight. I'll know more after I sort out the bell crank. There are some nice aluminum ones at Summit with bearing to ride on. Both ends of it are 90deg and have lots of holes to use, so that should probably work out. Nice that they are only a bit over $20. lostviking Posted June 7 Author Report Posted June 7 (edited) I have my new to me A833 overdrive being delivered this weekend. I know I will be using a 23 spline clutch, and that my throwout bearing is reused (or replaced with same). What I'm unsure of right now is if the bolt circle for a new pressure plate is the same as the flathead one? If it is, I can buy a new pressure plate from the same vendor. If not I'll have to look for a stock one, or have the flywheel redrilled. I have the shifter coming also btw. Both are from Dodge trucks. I'll work on the shifter handle if necessary to get it through the stock hole(ish). I want to use something that looks like the stock shifter. That means I might be cutting some stock for where the shifter handle bolts on and welding steel rod to make something that appears like the stock one. I'll reuse the knob. Intake/carbs, dual exhaust, new transmission. I've got some work lined up. I think I'll change the rear diff gears to 3.73 afterwards also to give it better take off in first. The overdrive will fix anything that brings up for top end. Who know's. I will need to run some numbers in the MPH/RPM calc, but might even be using 4.10's. lostviking Posted June 15 Author Report Posted June 15 Have the transmission on my work bench. I've sent the numbers off to Brewers to determine the exact rebuild kit. The input shaft wobbles a bit and it's not completely silent when I turn the shaft. Might just be dry, but the rebuild is pretty easy and not too expensive either. Sure is easier to carry this one than the tranny from my 71 Cuda. Quote
lostviking Posted June 15 Author Report Posted June 15 (edited) I've opened the tranny and frankly it looks brand new inside. I don't see any wear on the syncro's or anything. All gears engage fine. Los_Control Posted June 15 Report Posted June 15 Be curious what @sniper thinks. I say that seems like a lot of play. I have a 1952 Ford 4 spd and there is very little play in it. Then I have a 1970 Dodge 3 spd. PO said it was noisy in 2nd gear, so I know it needs work. It has as much end play as yours .... I Dunno Quote
lostviking Posted June 15 Author Report Posted June 15 Another thing I picked up was a shifter, same application, Dodge truck with the OD. I've got it in my ultrasonic cleaner now with ZEP. It's a bit crusty, but should clean right up. I posted the same video on HAMB. I got two responses fairly quick, both from tranny vendors. Both said just run it. I guess sitting in the pilot bushing it wouldn't be moving. The inside of the tranny was near new looking. I do kind of hate the new detent side covers. I had a hell of a time getting the damn thing back on. Took several tries to keep it in neutral and get it sitting down flat. Finally figured out what I was doing wrong. Maybe I should have waited until next week when my Passion rebuild book gets here, but I wanted to know if I needed to order a kit or not. Quote

lostviking Posted June 16 Author Report Posted June 16 Still cleaning the shifter up. I removed the handle, which I'm not planning on using. I'll machine a piece to fit the top of the shifter, then weld a rod similar (or even the actual) to the stock shifter. I want to keep the appearance. I took the SST dust cover off and dug out the majority of the years of grease, filled with various other matter, from the shifter. Then back into the ultrasonic cleaner. I'll run it until it's completely clean, then grease it so it moves smoothly without any gritty feel. Happy Fathers Day to those who are. Quote
lostviking Posted June 19 Author Report Posted June 19 Made a decision yesterday. I bought the rebuild kit for the transmission. It came out of a 1980 Dodge truck, so it does have some miles on it. It looked pretty good inside, but that doesn't account for seals and such. The way a OD works the roller bearings are involved much more than the non-OD version. I want to just put it in once and never had to think about it again. I know... So I will go through it and then it will be the last transmission I ever put in the truck. lostviking Posted June 22 Author Report Posted June 22 (edited) Wife is away, so I get to play. I went out and pulled the tranny today. I'm not offering it here, but I sold one on craigslist, so this one won't go over the scales either. Pictures tell most of the story, you pull the drive shaft, pull the parking brake lever. I didn't do anything else, but disconnect the battery. The truck is sitting on it's tires. I used a motorcycle jack and secured the tranny to it. Initially I had a couple 2x4 pieces under the brake band, but to fully clear the frame as I dropped it, I pulled them out. It was only resting on the front part of the jack at that time, but secure. I tilted the tranny over on it's side to pull it out, only having to remove the shifter handle. I took a shot to show where the shifter would be if you didn't tilt it. I found that a lot easier than pulling the top cover off. Kept the tranny closed and clean. I'm done for the day I think but now I can pull the inspection cover off and remove the clutch/pressure plate. Sorry, not completely on the tires. I keep the rear tires on those sleds so I can swing the tail over to exit the garage. Forgot until I looked at the pictures Edited June 22 by lostviking Quote
lostviking Posted June 26 Author Report Posted June 26 I purchased the OEM Dodge truck shifter on ebay. What they guy seems to have forgotten in the ad was to mention the shifter rods were badly rusted, at least the adjusters were. I was able to clean the main shifter, and free two of the three rods. Lots of WD40, heat cycles, tapping on the end of the rod with a small hammer...finally got two loose. Unfortunately the third snapped off rather than coming loose. I'll have to find a replacement for the 1-2 rod, or fab one. Since nothing is in the truck yet, I'll wait to decide what to do until I see what I'm up against with shifter placement. I'll be soaking the busted off adjuster to see if I can salvage it. Been under the weather since last Sunday with a persistent nose/sinus "cold". Might just be bad allergies too, it's been hot here in San Diego but not too bad. Quote

That said, I'm going to move the details of that swap into a specific thread and keep it all there. Waiting on the clutch to arrive, and I'm going to put some thread sealant on the IBR and cover bolts, since they go through to where the gear lube is. I'll copy and paste from this thread, which is to remain random talk, not job specific. Most/a lot of the information I'll put in the thread, comes from people who actually know what they are talking about, so I will try to credit that to the experts, not me. Quote
