Is that a tire dept gauge?   Sure looks like it.   Clever adaptation of use if it is!

Bing, do you have a wiring diagram for your car?   I don't have one to reference so I'll have to ask:   What is the actual path from the generator, which serves as ground, to the start circuit?   If it passes through the switch and your switch isn't 'on' or inoperative, you would have no ground for that post on the solenoid.   Please try grounding it with a jumper to remove all doubt.

Sorry I' late in answering your question. I do have a wiring diagram.Yes, generator tests grounded okay.  Wire from generator ground to solenoid upper left small terminal tests ground okay.  Large battery terminal tests okay for hot wire from battery.

The only wild card in this set-up seems to be the upper right small terminal which when a hot negative wire is  attached makes a faint sound but that's it. Maybe the terminals inside are corroded.  The reason that I tried a hot negative wire is that electricity from the instrument panel starter switch to that upper right terminal post is supposed to jump across and touch the ground terminal. That supposedly actives the relay to close the points. Right?
