Neira Posted October 7, 2023 Report Posted October 7, 2023 I installed these based on a picture I saw online (I thought). However, now the hood doesn’t want to shut. The car (48 Plymouth club coupe) didn’t come with them so I bought new ones to install. Of course now most of the nickels are gone so if they’re upside down I have to figure out how to remove and start over. Quote
D35 Torpedo Posted October 7, 2023 Report Posted October 7, 2023 ........well...can you see a way to put them "right side up"? Deductive reasoning goes a long way. Quote

Does the straight section of the hood spring point upward or does the coiled side point upward (like I have them)? Quote
Neira Posted October 7, 2023 Author Report Posted October 7, 2023 Just found some pics in the manual. Seems like the straight section should’ve beed placed upward. The manual covers a wide range of years (46-54) but the two pictures show that I have them upside down. Quote
Solution Plymouthy Adams Posted October 7, 2023 Solution Report Posted October 7, 2023 per my experience you are upside down...with the help of another set of hands, the inner fender liner removed....a lever, s hooks, chain and Bob's your uncle. Quote
D35 Torpedo Posted October 7, 2023 Report Posted October 7, 2023 Do you hear them binding? If not, I don't think that is your issue. How loose are the hinge pivots? Quote

I just flipped the springs and still won’t close. It closed without the springs. I loosened the bolts at all pivot points to see if the helped but still feels like I might bend something if I force it shut. It kind of feels like it isn’t pivoting and shifting rearward like it should. ? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 7, 2023 Report Posted October 7, 2023 many times these pld hinge will bind....before trying to force it close at the front hood opening and stressing the hood front to rear...walk to the hinge mount at the hood and light press down and maybe a tad to the rear as they normally close in said manner...lube the pivots point once again and exercise the hood and work this in and in the same token let the interference fit of the hinge and pivot self clean as it lubricated. 2 Quote
Neira Posted October 7, 2023 Author Report Posted October 7, 2023 Little bit better now but not where it needs to be. At least the springs are in the correct orientation now. That answers my original question. Thanks everyone. Quote
D35 Torpedo Posted October 7, 2023 Report Posted October 7, 2023 As you close the hood, push back on it. 1 Quote
Bob Ritter Posted October 8, 2023 Report Posted October 8, 2023 The way I would handle the hinge alignment problem, undo springs and remove the upper hood hatch then loosen the hinges and adjust the hood to fit, by the way the hinges need oil. Good luck Quote
Kilgore47 Posted October 9, 2023 Report Posted October 9, 2023 Looks like some new bolts in there also. They may be too tight. Quote
