?? lower Generator mounting: plain rod or threaded one??

Recommended Posts

Hello all!
The alternator at the bottom sits in its bracket (#52) with 2 lower eyes (red "x") and a rod.

On the front top it has an upper single eye ("Y")  for the screw that provides proper V-belt tension in the tensioner strap (#50) slot.

I cannot find the lower rod itself in the Parts book or the Service manual, nor a description of the mounting procedure.

Question:

I have received conflicting advice how to mount the Generator. Which should I follow?
a) to fix the generator thightly on its top slot strap AND on the bottom (threaded rod is suficient) to its bracket (very difficult to put and fasten the nuts!).
b) to fix the generator ONLY on its top slot strap thightly, leaving it FREE at the bottom on a smooth rod, (securing the plain rod only itself with nuts on one end or both).

How was it originally?

Thanks for Your help! Greetings from Düsseldorf! Go

I can only tell you how the generator on the P15 was set up when I got it.  There is not a rod that goes all the way through.  There are separate nuts and bolts on each end.

My 51 Plymouth also has individual bolts and nuts on each end. The car was purchased new by my dad so I relatively sure it is factory correct.

Hey Go! Mine also had nuts and bolts on the original motor. Here are pics from when I rebuilt it. It is from a P18.

All the engines I've seen over the years have had nuts & bolts at each end of the lower generator bracket, I seem to recall that using a threaded rod or similar will run into problems trying to insert it due to the oil filler tube being in the way........might be wrong but separate nuts & bolts is what I've always seen.......andyd
