chucky07 Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 well i ordered my new wiring harness and before i hook it up to my old gen..I have a question ...I originally hooked up my voltage regulator wrong because all the wires were hanging there...Anyways....i noticed smoke coming from the generator....so i disconnected.... I then hooked up correctly after peeling back all wires and tracing each one individually...It didn't smoke any more..but I think I "smoked it"..heeheehhe Any way to test it? I have purchased a new voltage regulator...and am waiting for the new harness before i hook it up...Should i hook up old generator or just have rebuilt or ? Any good ideas where to buy a new one? Nobody around here will touch it..No old timers here with knowledge about generators at all. I'd gladyly buy a new one..but I can't even find a source..Any ideas? thx kevin Quote
Reg Evans Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 There's a small elec. motor shop here in town that's been in business since the 50's. They have rebuilt several gen's and starters for me. If you don't have any luck around your area PM me and I'll have them fix yours. You can also buy a 6 volt alternator from Fifth Avenue Alternators. Quote
chucky07 Posted November 14, 2007 Author Report Posted November 14, 2007 well i just went to that website and the alt..looks very good, more reliable etc..and I can still keep my system 6 volt.....Anybody have a picture of one installed on their flathead engine? Just wondering how I would hook up mounts for the alternator.... Thanks...Reg..excellent info.... Quote
Allen I. Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 Jim Shepard posted a couple for me a while back. I have the 5th Ave alternator in myself. The bracketry is the worst part of it. It has proven to be extremely solid but IMHO there are too many points that can loosen up. Here is the thread. I found the same bracket in the pic locally for about half of what 5th Ave charged. http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=3957 Quote
greg g Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 Don has posted this before, but here is how he mounted his 12V alt using the stock gen bracket. Sure he won;t mind it being linked again. Usually when you let the smoke out of an electrical device, they don;t work anymore but these gennys are pretty tough and it may be OK. Auto zone and advance auto have the capability to test them if the counter guy knows what he is doing. A big "IF" these days. If you do go to the 6V alternator andit is a one wire design, the simple way to tire it is to connect the output wire to the wire the used to connect to the bat terminal of the VR. With the alt you won't need the VR so just tape off the other wires and leave them there in case you or someone else wants to go back to the genny. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v65/DonCoatney/Alternator/ Quote
chucky07 Posted November 14, 2007 Author Report Posted November 14, 2007 appreciate you guys input..very valuable info... I just got off the phone with the owner of Fifth Ave...He was very nice man..with tons of knowledge....As I figured..I ordered the 6v alt....(said he'd send priority today..now that's service)..... thx for posting the thread with the pix of it.....I think i'll have a friend weld up a bracket for it..so it looks a little more "stock" Quote
55 Fargo Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 Kevin, you could go with a GM single wire alt, it can be made into 6 volt positive or negative or left 12 volt. Modding a bracket is not too difficult, and with the alt, no more regulator. Right here where I live, these 6 volt positive ground GM alts are around $100.00.........................Fred Quote
chucky07 Posted November 15, 2007 Author Report Posted November 15, 2007 well fred...I just spent 200 on mine.....i'm always a "day late and a dollar short" ahahahha..But I appreciate the info..when the one i ordered konks out i'll definately go that route...Can you tell me how to make the regular gm alt...6 volt ...definately interested.. thx.. kevin Quote
Vintrader Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 Kevin, I wanted to do the same conversion this summer on my 51 but never got to it. If you find someone to fabricate the bracket I would be happy to buy one as well. It would save some time when I do get to the change over. Maybe other owners would do the same? Dutch Feel free to Email or PM me on this subject. Quote
MBF Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 A simple test for a generator-it should run like an electic motor if you hook it up to a battery directly. If it runs, it'll charge-those old units are pretty tough. That's why the Ford Model A's had a cutout on them instead to prevent them from running when the key was turned off. Mike Quote
