Doug&Deb Posted March 1, 2023 Report Posted March 1, 2023 While cleaning the head for my engine rebuild I noticed some stiff wire in the coolant passage. It must have been used by a foundry worker to clean the sand out after casting. I can’t figure out how they got it in there and I sure can’t figure out how to get it out. It doesn’t appear to be blocking the passage so for now I’m leaving it alone. Quote
LeRoy Posted March 1, 2023 Report Posted March 1, 2023 its in my block as well, i searched and found mention of it but no definitive reason or purpose Quote
Hickory Posted March 1, 2023 Report Posted March 1, 2023 I've been told it to help from electrolysis, as In a static charge from moving coolant Quote
Loren Posted March 1, 2023 Report Posted March 1, 2023 When they make the cores for the inside of the coolant area, they use wire to hold the cores together so they don't suffer "Core Shift." Some times they don't get all of the wire out. Some times they don't get all the sand out either! A friend got a real good deal on a new Edsel because it would only run on 7 cylinders. The factory hadn't gotten the sand out of one of the intake runners. Fast forward a few decades and another friend who worked at a Mercedes dealer said one of their cars had a blocked off runner in its intake manifold. So this is an on going issue with manufacturers. Here's a photo of a piece of cast iron I took out of a Chrysler Industrial 265 cylinder head. 4 Quote
