1942 Chrysler Vacamatic Transmission - carb wiring

Recommended Posts

I have read the many threads on this transmission and printed out various wiring diagrams to try and help me install the various vacuum components and associated wiring. However, I can find almost no diagrams which show where the wire on the carb goes. It's currently wired to the Interrupter switch, which I believe is wrong. In any event I have never had the system working, so I believe lots of what is already there is wrong.

Can someone also please clarify the wiring for the governor. I have attached a photo from another thread, which shows a wire running from the Governor to the solenoid. However the wiring diagram shows the cable from the governor goes to the throttle kickdown switch. Which is it?

Any help would be much appreciated.

You asked for any help, so here goes.  I have a wiring diagram for an S-11 DeSoto 46-48.  My carburetor looks the same as yours.  Your trans. looks different because of the vacuum controls, whereas mine has hydraulic controls.  I assume you have a transmission relay box on your left inner fender.  The carburetor anti-stall terminal on the carb. goes to the SOL terminal on the relay as well as the Solenoid on the trans.  The kick down switch wire on the carb. goes to the TH on the relay, as well as to the Governor on the trans.  The interrupter switch wire goes to the INT terminal on the relay.  I have a 42 DeSoto Parts List and it lists a wire that goes from the Solenoid to the Governor on the trans.  So the answer to your last question is BOTH.

Hi Marc,

This is really helpful and I appreciate you taking the time. Your reply seems to suggest that you may have more than one wire coming from your carb - is that the case?

Hi Norman

A huge thank you for this, and still trying to get over the coincidence of meeting you by chance!

I now need to try and digest everything.

Thanks again,

Mike

Yes it is.  There is a red wire going from the SOL on the trans. relay to anti-stall switch on the carb, and also a wire going from SOL to the solenoid on the trans.  But I don't think a 42 has a solenoid.  You should check your shop manual. I looked at the diagram above and you do have a solenoid but it may be somewhere other than the trans. On my 48, there is also a yellow wire going from the TH terminal of the relay to the Kick down switch on the carb.  AND also a wire going from the TH to the Governor on the trans.
