midcansusp Posted January 15, 2023 Report Posted January 15, 2023 My project is almost completed. About 10 years ago, I found a 1949 Dodge Wayfarer roadster with removable aluminum framed side curtains. One of the last items needed is a pair of interior sun visors. I now have the chromed brackets but need to get measurements to fabricate the visors. Can somebody please help!! Otherwise, the car still has the fluid drive, but the transmission was changed over to an R10 1955 Plymouth overdrive. The engine was replaced with a 1954 Chrysler 265 engine bored to .080 to give it a 277 cubic inch displacement. The exhaust manifold was modified by George Asche for dual exhaust, an Edgy aluminum finned head from the Montana Mopar Boys was installed and presently working on the finishing touches of adding an AOK triple carburetor setup. A Monroe power steering system was taken from a 1954 Plymouth and basically bolted in. Quote
Sniper Posted January 15, 2023 Report Posted January 15, 2023 Can't help with a pattern but I just added sun visors to my 51 Cambridge, bought them new from Rock Auto. Got the brackets from E bay, used of course. The used stuff did come with the remains of the old cardboard, not suitable for a pattern though. Quote
midcansusp Posted January 17, 2023 Author Report Posted January 17, 2023 Thanks! The visors for the roadster are quite different. They are narrower than what you would find on closed models and have two hinges that are screwed to the header panel. Hinges for older GM cabriolet models have been reproduced and are a fairly good match . Hoping that someone with a Wayfarer roadster sees this posting and willing to help! Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted January 17, 2023 Report Posted January 17, 2023 1949-52 MoPar convertibles all use the same pot metal chromed visor brackets like the Dodge Roadster. Including the 1950 Chrysler T&C Woodie hardtop. Two brackets per visor. RT/Left A real tough item to find. A not so good picture of of these brackets.. Quote

Expand If this is correct, then I have a 50 Desoto convertible I can make a pattern from. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted January 17, 2023 Report Posted January 17, 2023 Are there eight holes in the windshield header? Two mounting holes for each side visor bracket. As the roadster was a low end Dodge convertible I suppose like the trucks.... did all the roadster cars come with visors? The early roadsters had plexiglas side curtains..a unique car for sure. Quote
midcansusp Posted January 17, 2023 Author Report Posted January 17, 2023 Yes, the header has 8 holes. I did get the chrome pieces that bolt to the header when I bought the car. The more fragile part of the hinge fit on the inner and outer side of the visor. Chevy of the 40s sold me that part of the hinge, which is vert close to what was found on the Dodge. My roadster is an early model with the aluminum framed plexiglass side curtains. 1 Quote

midcansusp Posted January 17, 2023 Author Report Posted January 17, 2023 Thank you! Thank you! Thank You! I think that this is going to work. I will be cutting out a template and test it on the car soon. Looking at your hinges, the ones on the Wayfarer hug the header a lot more, but that does not change the shape of the visor. Anxious to get at it! Quote
midcansusp Posted March 9, 2023 Author Report Posted March 9, 2023 With the measurements received from P15-D24 member vintage6T, I was successful in getting a pair of visors made for my Wayfarer roadster. Specs were sent to Pop Displays of South Bend, Indiana and within days, they made me a pair out of translucent 3/16 inch thick green plexiglass. I finally had a chance to stick them into the hinges today and probably fasten them down tomorrow. Obviously, they will not look like the original, but will appear as a suitable option for that era. 3 Quote
