Wood and Steel Posted April 20, 2022 Report Posted April 20, 2022 Hi everyone, I recently picked up a drivetrain out of a '53 Plymouth, mostly for the OD transmission, but I'm a bit confused by the differential. As far as I can tell, it reads 2.38. From my research, I'm not seeing that as an option on a '53. It made me wonder what was on my '51 Plymouth, as I've never bothered to look. The engine is out of a '57; not sure of the rest of the drivetrain. It looks like it says 3.04 to me, which I also can't find as an option. Any idea what I might have? I don't know much about gear ratios, so what would be the better option paired with an R10 for relaxed Sunday driving/road-tripping ? Quote
FarmerJon Posted April 20, 2022 Report Posted April 20, 2022 I think you are looking at the wrong numbers. I have a pic someplace with the right areas to look marked, I will try to post it later tonight, I think lowest numerical gear made was 3.54 or so, all the way up to 4.11+ Quote

It definitely seemed wrong to me. Quote
Young Ed Posted April 20, 2022 Report Posted April 20, 2022 There is a flat spot right at the top of the housing. Would be facing the floor of the car when installed. Look for the stamping there Quote
Veemoney Posted April 21, 2022 Report Posted April 21, 2022 I found they are usually marked in one or both of these spots with this style number stamp. First pic is the top and second is looking from the bottom. 2 Quote
FarmerJon Posted April 21, 2022 Report Posted April 21, 2022 Young and Vee pretty much got it covered, but incase another angle would help.... Quote
