1946 newyorker Posted February 26, 2022 Report Posted February 26, 2022 Can anyone tell me the amount of splines on a 1946 Chrysler steering box & if anything later model will fit the original pitman arm splines. I’m in Australia & have a Right hand drive 46. Thanks in advance for any help given. It’s appreciated. Quote
James_Douglas Posted February 26, 2022 Report Posted February 26, 2022 Look up old threads by Don Smith on the conversion of his '48 Desoto. Although the Desoto Suburban has a larger steering box, I think the output splines may be the same. He found that a particular power steering box was splined the same. Quote
DonaldSmith Posted February 26, 2022 Report Posted February 26, 2022 From my powee steering report: "I decided to replace my manual steering gearbox with a readily available power steering gearbox. This would allow me to keep the steering pitman arm and tie rods. "I verified that the pinion shaft on the manual box was 1-1/4-inch diameter at the root, with 40 splines (Four of the splines are flattened, so that the pitman arm for various applications is in one of four positions.)"
