Fuel tank connection

It seems like a simple task but it is driving me nuts.  I have a brand new gas tank installed by the previous owner.  No fuel lines.  I am working on installing the fuel lines and thought it connected to a fitting on the side of the tank.  it currently has a plug in it but it is the right size connection.  There is also a plug in the bottom of the tank which I assumed was a drain plug.  As I was getting measurements for my fuel line I realized the connection I had planned to hook up to is about half way up the side of the tank from the bottom.  That would only allow me to access about half of the gas in the tank before it dropped to a level below the line in the side of the tank.  If I hook up to the fitting in the bottom of the tank the fuel line is exposed to possibly hitting debris in the road.  Does anyone have any pictures of the fuel line connection to the tank or an explanation why that fitting is half way up the side?

The fuel tank connection on my car is about 1/2 up the tank. Inside there is a pickup tube that goes to near the bottom of the tank. That is pretty standard, at least for that era. With a light and a mirror you might be able to look inside enough to see if yours is the same way.

Yes as Tod says there should be a pickup tube inside there. The line faces the front of the truck and makes a quick zag to run along the frame up to the front.

 Perhaps you are mistaken .  The outlet is on the front of the tank in the stock location . And the line drops down inside as mentioned .
