Transmission ID

Hey everyone!  First post.  Been following for awhile now.  Trying not to ask things that have been asked before.  Got a 41 Plymouth SD 2 dr sedan earlier this year as a project.  Got it running and driving.  Still lots to do.  

Anyway, someone got me thinking about an overdrive for it.  Went to the junkyard today to see if they had anything.  One car potentially has one.  It’s a later model Plymouth from the 40s or early 50s. There is an overdrive lever under the dash. But I could not see any kind of solenoid on the transmission housing itself like I was told to look for.  Pictures are attached to help identify this for me seems like I might be able to get a good deal on it. The car has been sitting for God knows how long but the transmission still goes through the gears.

No OD that I can see. Just a typical 3 spd

Borg Warner R10 talk is tossed around extentsively in here. If you find one they can be expensive.

good looking set of wheels. an OD should be way down on your list (but snag the underdash cable)

I didn’t think it was.  Glad I didn’t get it.  The overdrive pull cable threw me for a loop.  Definitely going to snag that next time I’m there.  I was kinda pressed for time today anyway.  Also going to figure what the cable was run to.

If the wrecking yard car is a 1940, you might want to grab that transmission.

40s have the only optional 2nd gear ratio.

The cable is nice but also get the relay and carburetor bracket and kick down switch.

I always look in the trunk, sometimes treasures lurk there.

Don't the 1940 have a cable shift vs the rods? I agree check all around that car. Grab the cable and any OD parts still hanging out

You know I don't know about a cable shifter.

I do know the 1940 was the first column shifter and the cluster and 2nd gear will fit in the 1941-56 transmissions (perhaps more years but my interest lie with the 1949-54 cars)

The 1939 and earlier had a floor shifter and the transmission was different.

My current project is an Overdrive transmission overhaul with a 1940 second gear. Report will follow.

39 was the transition with roadking having the floor shift(probably to use up supplies) and the deluxe being column shift. I believe the first 2-3 years had a cable vs the rods. Somewhere along the way the speedometer cable switched sides too but I don't recall which was first. When I put the OD in my 48 I had to get an extension because of it
