billrigsby Posted October 29, 2021 Report Posted October 29, 2021 (edited) Trying to figure out just what I got, both are identical, the orange one (don't ask, not sure why it got painted orange!) was original in the truck, the rusty one was attached to the D34 230ci Dodge Car Dodge 6 Custom 1950 engine with a PTO attached, came out of a ??? truck. Both are 1948/49 era. They do have different parking brake setups. I need to pull the tops, inspect and decide which to use, also have a fluid drive, but I think the conversion would be such a pain and unsure about it right now. billrigsby Posted October 29, 2021 Author Report Posted October 29, 2021 I do not see much difference inside, both look to be serviceable, one would be easier to paint since it was cleaned and painted already. I also do not see any sign of syncros-at least not what i am used to seeing. ORANGE RUSTY Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted October 30, 2021 Report Posted October 30, 2021 I would want to know if the roller and needle bearings have rust pitting. Some of your gear teeth are some what pitted from sitting. Quote
billrigsby Posted October 30, 2021 Author Report Posted October 30, 2021 Yeah the Rusted one looked worse on the inside as far as stuff on the gears. I'll probably open up the Orange one, looks simple enough. So am I guessing it's a three-speed non Synchro, at least I can add a PTO if I want to. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted October 30, 2021 Report Posted October 30, 2021 Those two transmissions are non syncro four speeds. Quote
billrigsby Posted October 30, 2021 Author Report Posted October 30, 2021 Yes four Speed, duh I do know how to drive a stick shift and I ran it through the gears I'm not sure why I said three. Wish they were Synchro though going to tear some stuff up I bet, this is going to be a learning experience. Glad I got 5 acres to practice on so I don't embarrass myself in public LOL. I can 'kind of do it' in my 90 F250 but that trany's got so much slop it's pathetic. Quote

Dodgeb4ya Posted October 30, 2021 Report Posted October 30, 2021 Those 4 speed spur gear transmissions are tough and trouble free. Also are actually easy to shift with a little practice. I love the sound of them. When 16 (1968) I learned to drive my brothers 50 DT panel with that same spur gear trans. He still has it and drove it last month. Quote
Veemoney Posted October 30, 2021 Report Posted October 30, 2021 Bill I have the same transmission (case C-18661) in my 47 WC. I'm still clanking into gear on occasion with mine and does have the big truck whine to go with it. 1st gear is double super low stump puller that I never used. Just changed out the rear center chunk 4.10 for a 3.54 gear. Prior to the change out I rarely used 2nd gear either. I don't think you can hurt that trans, just change oil in mine and it came out as clean as it went in. Also picked up one of your parts disks, Thanks Quote
