fireguyfire Posted October 17, 2021 Report Posted October 17, 2021 I’m in the middle of restoring my Uber rare 1958 Fargo Sweptside truck and have the rolling chassis and power train just about done. my question is regarding the front brakes. I have the original front tapered hub/front drum combo from the factory I believe on both front brakes. They have been turned in the past and would be out of spec if I was to turn them again, so I would like to replace them with new. unfortunately I have had zero luck trying to source new ones through my local parts suppliers. I am in western Canada; can anyone out there help me source some new from hubs/brake drums for a 58 1/2 ton? I was also wondering if a guy could grind the rivers holding the tapered hub to the drum, and then just replace the drum part of the assembly; if so, how would a guy go about connecting the old hub to a new drum? Any help with these front drums would be appreciated! Quote
JBNeal Posted October 17, 2021 Report Posted October 17, 2021 As much as I want to keep stuff original, the scarcity of brake drum replacements has made me decide to go with a disc brake conversion when the time comes, as there are several options available with technical support. I heard a rumor that some of the later 50s D-series brakes carry over to the 60s, but I do not have part numbers to verify. Quote

It really isn't mandatory to fasten the drum as they are centered on the hub by a little pilot ring and sandwiched between the wheel and hub by the lug studs and nuts. but, to be sure they don't dislodge during a wheel change they can be attached by a couple of machine screws. I've drilled and tapped holes in the drum and hub, then drilled the drum hole out to clear the threads. Followed that by a countersink to accommodate a flat head screw. Just be sure the countersink is deep enough to completely bury the screw head. You can do that on the rear too, and it makes the next brake service much easier!
