Frank Gooz Posted May 23, 2021 Report Posted May 23, 2021 I am trying to find a problem on my 1950 Dodge Coronet, With a gyro-matic transmission. Just like the last time i had trouble was running great then it died three or four times before I got back home. Last time I found a lot of little things wrong. Now I am not sure When I got home the Yellow wire on the from the carb to tranny had come off. I put it back on and the same thing. Dies at the shift point after letting off the then a soon as you touch the pedal Blah Blah dies but starts up sort of easy. I am thinking that it mite be the Dashpot? Dodge calls it a dashpot, The Desoto/Chrysler calls it a anti-stall. Are these the same thing? Quote
keithb7 Posted May 23, 2021 Report Posted May 23, 2021 (edited) Run 6V directly to the coil that actives the anti-stall system. Looks like they call it the lock out assembly on the bottom page. Is this where your yellow wire hooks up? Touch the housing area with a screw driver. Should be non-magnetic. Then send 6V to it. A temporary Jumper wire off the battery should work fine. Activate the solenoid. Does it now become magnetic? Screwdriver sticks to it now? This might help you diagnose if it is working or not. When the coil inside there becomes magnetic, a needle is lifted off a seat inside the carb bowl. Allowing extra fuel to flow. Preventing an engine stall. When 6V is removed the magnetic field disappears. A spring pushes the said needle back to its seat. Edited May 23, 2021 by keithb7 Quote
chrysler1941 Posted May 23, 2021 Report Posted May 23, 2021 Keith's diagnose is correct for Gyro-Matic. You should also be able to hear a click when magnetized. Just want to add, not all Chryslers anti-stall where negative controlled. Some where positive controlled by kickdown and governor having a minus at other terminal. So jumping a hot wire on these will not work unless it's ground wire on the correct terminal. That's why Anti-Stall has two galvanic isolated terminals. Quote
Sniper Posted May 23, 2021 Report Posted May 23, 2021 I would bet the wiring diagram in the FSM shows where that yellow wire goes. Quote
Frank Gooz Posted May 23, 2021 Author Report Posted May 23, 2021 The yellow wire runs from the ( 1950 shop manual ) the " anti-stall " to the kick down on the carburetor then from there to the Transmission governor and both the interrupter and the solenoid. Hope this sheds light for someone. The car starts idles very smooth, ran great until this current issue. I do hear a click when shifting. I just let off the pedal click, shifted, touch the pedal and it dies. Quote

The yellow wire will be grounded when one of these are activated so a jumper wire to other terminal as Keith stated will energize it. The click you hear are form transmission relay. Dash pot click is very weak. Quote
