ChrisMinelli Posted April 20, 2020 Report Posted April 20, 2020 Hello, I am re-doing the brakes on my '52 Plymouth and one of the front drums was stuck good. In trying to back off the adjustable cam bolt on the back of the backing plate one of them broke off in my hand. If I drill out the rest of the bolt, where can I get a replacement? I assume the bolt is not cammed or otherwise special. Napa? Also -- these bolts simply screw into the plate and push into the cam, right? Do I need an entirely new backing plate assembly? Thanks in advance. Quote
dpollo Posted April 20, 2020 Report Posted April 20, 2020 (edited) In over 50 years of working on these cars I have never run into this problem (yet) The backing plate should be the same for all 10 inch 46 to 54 perhaps you will find one close to home. Rears are the same, fronts are L&R. Edited April 24, 2020 by dpollo removed offer of part Quote

In over 50 years of working on these cars I have never run into this problem (yet) I would be pleased to supply this part, or a complete backing plate. First off, let us be clear, these are the minor adjustment cams, not the anchors. On the front, Left and Right Backing plates are different. Regrettably at this time shipping is out of the question especially as I am in Canada. they should be the same for all 10 inch 46 to 54 perhaps you will find one closer to home. The broken piece is the driver side back adjusting cam bolt on the front axle. (If that makes sense). Looking around apparently these was a part that Mopar made for replacement, so I guess they do break sometimes. I probably would buy the whole backing plate from you seeing as the other cam is probably close to breaking too. The former owner was not good with maintenance and cleaning the gunk off the chassis. Can't sell it due to the current pandemic? Quote
dpollo Posted April 21, 2020 Report Posted April 21, 2020 (edited) sorry for breaking the rules. Edited April 21, 2020 by dpollo post not in the correct forum Quote
plymouthcranbrook Posted April 21, 2020 Report Posted April 21, 2020 I managed to break one on my 52 Plymouth many years ago and I simply welded it back together and it has worked ever since. 1 Quote
ChrisMinelli Posted April 21, 2020 Author Report Posted April 21, 2020 I don’t have the capability (or expertise) to weld; I think my strategy is to just get a replacement backing plate. Comparing the broken one to the good one I think the broken one was replaced itself some years ago. The good one has the patina and overall appearance of the rest of the car. Heavier, too. Quote
