Yzrider22k Posted September 1, 2019 Report Posted September 1, 2019 Needs some help please. Had a leaking rear drum on a 51 B3B. Removed the drum to see that the wheel studs loosen up, backed into the internal brake line and broke it off. Simple fix, but now I cannot get the studs tight enough, they they keep backing up into the internal drum. I also can’t seem to find an easy way to get the wheel studs out. Doesn’t have enough room. what am I missing? Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted September 1, 2019 Report Posted September 1, 2019 It sounds like the stud holes are stripped in the hub . And I don't understand " I can't seem to find an easy way to get the wheel studs out " Don't they just punch out ? Would it help to cut the old studs off and buy new studs ? If the new studs are also too loose in the hub , it might help to weld them in place from the inside . Or find a replacement hub . Quote
Los_Control Posted September 1, 2019 Report Posted September 1, 2019 Several people in the past, pound out the existing studs or holes in the drums ... then re-tap and install new studs. Just saying, depends on your vehicle, what process you want to do .... If you want original, you may need to find new drums. You want a driver, you could drill and tap. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted September 1, 2019 Report Posted September 1, 2019 A B3B wouldn’t have wheel studs unless someone converted the hubs, or a different axle is installed. More info is needed... Quote
Yzrider22k Posted September 1, 2019 Author Report Posted September 1, 2019 (edited) Thanks for the responses. The studs are threaded into the hub, but for some reason they won’t completely tighten and loose up when you tighten the lug nuts. Two of them are stripped so I might have to heli coil. Yzrider22k Posted September 1, 2019 Author Report Posted September 1, 2019 I’ll upload them tomorrow, but after some research, it looks like a different axle set up then stock. Quote
Los_Control Posted September 1, 2019 Report Posted September 1, 2019 I dunno, how cheap was it? ... maybe I offer you $50 more then you paid and take it off your hands? Sounds like someone already upgraded the rear axle. The 3/4 ton and larger do have studs screwed into the drums. And are of a larger diameter. While the 1/2 tons used wheel bolts and locating pins to secure the wheels. But these can be modified to studs. Just sounds like your truck has some mods done to it already. Need pics to see whats what. Quote
Yzrider22k Posted September 6, 2019 Author Report Posted September 6, 2019 (edited) Sorry for the late post. Here’s some pictures. It looks like they are just half inch grade 8 bolts Edited September 6, 2019 by Yzrider22k Quote
Los_Control Posted September 6, 2019 Report Posted September 6, 2019 This is what the original look like. Seems like previous owner ground the rivets off of the drum. This is a mod that makes it easier to remove the rear drums without a puller. Another mod is to tap threads to correct diameter, install modern studs with lug nuts. This photo is from DCM and they sell them. https://dcmclassics.com/brake-parts/558-br-277-lug-bolt-lh-each.html?search_query=wheel+lugs&results=1 Quote
Los_Control Posted September 6, 2019 Report Posted September 6, 2019 Just be aware, these are for a 1/2 ton truck, 3/4 ton and larger trucks I believe are bigger and actual studs and lug nuts. And these old dodges used left hand threads on the driver side, right hand threads on the passenger side. Quote
