starter slipping

My '47 special deluxe starts strong, but then slips after holding down the starter for more than 2-3 seconds.  I would need to do this 5-6 times for it to start.  I just recently replaced the starter, but had this problem before hand.

Check the ring gear on the flywheel for damage.

Does it have the stomp starter?

   Bad Bendix starter gear.  It turns the engine over and then spins. When it retracts it gets a different bite, till it spins again.

i had an issue similar, my starter was rebuilt but it slipped, it was the 1 way bearing that was on the starter, the bearing is on the teeth that engage the flywheel

Bad sprag clutch drive in starter drive?

In 1952, the starter drive was changed to minimize this problem,  and it worked.  If you can get a starter from 52 to 55, change the whole unit.
